Because no matter how much elite talent you have, you don't always have a good team. Tampa's bottom 6 and goaltending are terrible.

Acquired Visnosky for peanuts.
Acquired Thomas for a 2nd, if he doesn't report, no harm done.
Well of course you can get some good players from waivers, If you are first one to pick.

They also have Carle who's worth every penny of his contract, Brewer, Lee and Aulie.

Visnovsky for peanuts is a bit strong. He cost a 2nd round pick didn't he?

I remember I was arguing with a fan (Av-American? ) who thought Avs made a huge mistake not signing Carle.

I understand why you don't want Mandzukic at Arsenal, but he would get some SERIOUS playing time here.

I know I was vilified for saying Carle is terrible defensively and that he'll get vastly overpaid. I'm glad we dodged a bullet there.

I'll respond to the part of your post about Mandžo in the other sports thread.

Maybe that system needs tweaked, too. Maybe it should be more like the draft lottery, where every team that puts in for a waived player gets a weighted chance to land him.

I had the exact same thought. A first round sweep at the hands of the Blackhawks would be nice to watch, too.

I believe the Avs could conceivably still finish ahead of not only FLA/TB, but also Nashville and Edmonton. Carolina's out of reach.

One loss - OT or regulation - and they can only finish ahead of FLA.

I have this correct?

Yep, one lose in any way then NSH and EDM become unreachable. One Regulation loss and TBL is no longer in play.

Would be nice to lose to PHX tomorrow to ensure our Top 3 pick. Then go out and smash Minnesota on Saturday, to finish the year on a slightly positive note.

I think even an OT loss by the Avs and TB can't be caught. Am I wrong here?

Yes, as long as we lose in some manner against Phoenix we are second worst.

Their fans seem to really want Mac, but they have no real input. Their GM has been watching Halifax a lot lately.

Was Carolina already out of reach? If not their point tonight definitively makes it so.
