Looking for anything similar to Final Fantasy Tactics/Disgaea.

Or, something like a real-time strategy where the troops level up after successful wins/survivals. I like the older Command and Conquers, Age of Empires, and things with the same engine/design (LoTR, Star Wars, etc.)

In short, I like to build a well defended base and see how many people I can fend off...

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Warcraft 3?

And Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are monstrous successes for a reason. They are both very good.

Have not tried Warcraft 3.

I will check out Warcraft 3 and Starcraft.

I am a huge fan of Rome: Total War as well but I don't have enough time for that game...

What about Diablo III? I have literally not paid attention to any of the news that came out when it was released. I really enjoyed Diablo II. Not looking to play with others at this point...just want to be able to level up and try to get some rare items...

I lost more or less a year of my life playing Diablo II, so you'd think I would be excited as hell about Diablo II right? Well not really. Have not heard much of the same stuff I heard about Diablo II.

I can attest to SC/WC3/SC2 having life stealing powers as well. Blizzard does a great job when it comes to RTS games.

WC3 or SC2 would both be excellent choices and it depends on what type of RTS you want. SC2 is the more macro heavy game in which the person who's able to expand and control all of their bases is likely to be the victor. WC3 is more micro intensive and the control of units largely leads to victory (particularly the controlling of the hero units).

One of the all time great games, and unless I'm mistaken, the real launching point for DotA and subsequently League of Legends.

I've been considering jumping back in to it.

Dont forget its expansion, The Frozen Throne.

There's a site out there that's devoted to hosting quality war3 replays. I used to watch a lot of them when I was playing so I could get better.

Couldn't you just use save states?

Within the program it's possible to save the game at an exact point and load it from that point later.

There is no save game under file. Only options are:

Open ROM
Close ROM
Reset Simulation
Pause Simulation

It's weird because Pokemon works just fine with saving, resuming game, etc.

Ogre Battle series sounds right up your alley. They were designed by the same people. FFT was actually supposed to be an Ogre Battle game, but it was changed early in development so it could be marketed to a wider group.

March of the Black Queen and Let Us Cling Together are the two best, in that order, personally.

March of the Black Queen will likely need to be played on an SNES emulator, and Let Us Cling Together was recently ported to PSP/Vita.

Awesome, thanks!

You guys certainly helped. I will be sure to check these all out at some point.

What about Dragon Age, fellas? Pretty cheap on Steam. I like random battles/spawn sites and not a lot of quest-based stuff. I like to try to collect items...so not a big fan of games that have only 4 items with no prefixes or suffixes.

Got it to work for the most part. The saves still doesn't work but I got the freeze/defrost game state to work, which is essentially like a save function. I just enabled all file functions and moved everything onto my desktop, then moved the ROMs into the VBA folder.

That's a better decision, unless you're a huge fan of Bioware.

DAO wasn't bad, it was just extremely formulaic. It also had some pacing issues, IMO. But I'm very critical of Bioware, and I'm not usually a big fan of their stuff since KOTOR 1/2.

IMO Dragon Age was terrible, and I loved Star Wars KOTOR and liked Mass Effect. Skyrim should be a lot of fun, I spent hundreds and hundreds of hours between Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion.
