Taking a look back at 50+ years worth of "The Hockey News" covers

Alright guys, I said I was eventually going to do it, so here it is. I've had them saved on my desktop for awhile now. If anyone is interested in a cool little look back at THN history, every single cover since the beginning of the 1958-1959 season (well, 1 missing in total but it's on its way shortly, and I'll be able to add it as well) is there for your viewing, along with all the yearbooks, special magazines, pool guides etc..

Some issues are in better condition than others, and a few pictures didn't come out as clear as I had hoped. But in any case, they are all viewable.

I've broken it down onto 2 different photobucket accounts.

Quote:
1. 1958-1959 through 1992-1993.

http://s1286.photobucket.com/user/Co...yNews/profile/

2. 1993-1994 through present day + All special editions and various other items from my collection

http://s1273.photobucket.com/user/Co...News2/profile/
Make sure you click on "albums" in the bottom right corner. Then, on the next page make sure "albums and stories" (left of page) isn't hidden. All of the different albums (organized into years) will be listed.

Any comments or questions about a specific issue in the collection, feel free to ask.

So, to anyone interested..enjoy!

Amazing. Very nice job. I don't imagine it was very quick to do this. You are to be commended. Much appreciated.

Thanks. The process of snapping all the photos took a very long time, but I did it over the course of a few weeks. I've had them saved on my desktop for quick reference purposes. Uploading them all to photobucket actually didn't take nearly as long as I had originally expected.

Just curious:

Do you have the one that says "Bruins are better than Montreal" cover?

just wondering

THN wouldn't put such a blatant lie on one of their covers, so no.

I can't seem to find the whole collection, I don't see the "images and stories" link. Turned off all the ad block and no script programs too. I want to search for a certain cover I recall from the 73-74 season - "It's All in the Mind with the Golden Seals", about them using "Mind Dynamics" to prevent from getting discouraged during a particularly bad season.

At the far left of the screen after clicking on albums, you should see a little arrow above "show albums and stories."

Just noticed this:

There was a discussion a little while back asking when "The Great One" or "The Great Gretzky" first became his nickname. Common belief was 1981 or 1982 some time, but this is an issue from 1978. Could have just been a "catchy" headline, but it appears he was already being referred to as "Great" by that time.

Thanks for posting these. Always fun to look back on old hockey news. One of my biggest regrets is after subscribing to the magazine for 23 years I haven't built up a collection of the older magazines.

This is just awesome . I'm not sure which covers I enjoy more, the ones that contain major historical events or the ones that chronicle the minutia of my childhood.

Kudos for putting this together.

Nearing 10,000 views combined with the 2 links after only a few days. Glad to see people are interested.

Agreed. Never was a big fan of Adam Oates.

On a more serious note, does anyone know who has appeared on the cover the most times?

I'll double check, but I remember in their 60th anniversary issue they did a total count. I believe it was either Gretzky or Lindros.

Not simply referred to as "great", but as "the Great Gretzky". Good catch/find!

There's also another cover calling him The Great Gretzky, player of the year, in the 79-80 set.
