Terrible move by the Rangers. Just made their own team worse, and made a conference rival stronger. They deserve for this move to bite them in the ass come playoff time, should they actually make it.

Is New York preparing for a trade because I don't understand why they're waiving everybody?

I was tired of seeing Dumont in the lineup really. Halpern was decent with the Habs. IIRC he is right handed. And we lack right handed guy to take faceoffs.

Nice to see the positive comments from Rangers' fans about Halpern. We need him just for faceoffs and penalty killing and he seems to still be solid at that. Unfortunately some our fanbase thinks its more important to add a goon instead of addressing our PK and faceoffs..

So overrated by Rangers fans. He brought nothing that can't be replaced easily. Doesn't produce offense at all. 1 assist in 30 games.

Fast skater still, which is why fans think he's useful. Still good at faceoffs. His penalty killing is also overrated One of the reasons we are 8% points lower than last year imo. Can't block shots, can't throw the body, just overall a useless player.

I know some rangers fans will disagree with me here because he gives effort every game, but at this point anyone can produce more than him pretty much, unless it's stu bickel.

We needed a face-off specialist. We got one, and he's right-handed. I loved him with Montreal when he played here a few years ago. Doesn't address the toughness issue, but certainly addresses the PK and face-off.

Who was Halpern playing with in New York?

When healthy, he'll be playing with Prust and Armstrong (or Moen) in MTL...

I think something has to be up. I usually don't like it when people assume someone is added or called up or sent down, meaning their is a trade on the horizon.

It's just Bourque is coming back and I believe Blunden was called up.

Pacioretty Desharnais Gallagher
Bourque Plekanec Gionta
Galchenyuk Eller Ryder
Moen Prust Armstrong
Dumont White Halpern
Blunden

That's a crap load of forwards. What I don't get to is they re-sign a guy like Nokelainen who is also decent on FOs, got size, and a really good skater. They demoted him and claim Halpern. Didn't really give him a chance.

It just doesn't make sense. Most likely means were out on Talbot most likely, if he is actually available.

But with that crop of forwards something must be in the works. I hate assuming but just too much clutter if you ask me.

Dumont and Blunden will be going back down. Diaz is nowhere close to returning either.

Totally agree, I don't get the love for him from my fellow Ranger fans either. This guy was a dime a dozen player. And I for one won't miss him at all. MTL picked up a good 4th line player, we have like 5 of those. Only thing that was different about Halpern is that he's good in faceoffs..that's about it.

Blunden and Dumont go back to Hamilton if everyone is healthy (which there is no guarentee of happening).

And Halpern is miles better than Nokelainen even if they are a similar class of player.

Rangers have been using him in a heavy defensive role and he rarely gets scored on in it. Upper quartile in the league for shots and goals against. Only 2 goals for 5 on 5 but also only 6 against. His lack of offense is also likely due to crummy puck luck than anything else, his line's shot rate shows he should have gotten a couple more by shear volume.

I agree with you. NY needs to make something happen from the 3rd line. Boyle will move to the 4th and will provide more worth than Halpern in that position. It's not that Boyle scores more, but he wins more FO, way more physical and is better defensively. Halpern wasn't terrible but he also wasn't bringing anything to the table that couldn't be replaced. I wish him luck in Montreal.

Now the big question is what will NY do for that 3rd line spot? Some talk of Fast coming over from the SEL now this his team is out of the playoffs but I'm not so sure a rookie line (Kreider-Miller-Fast) will be able to produce much. They will be fast as hell though, no pun intended. Maybe a trade for a solid NHL 3rd liner is coming? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Diaz isn't a forward, I was referring to the forward group, but Diaz does raise the roster limit as well, when he does come back.

Even with Dumont and Blunden going down they still have 14 forwards.

they may sign Zuccarello, they may play top prospect Fast from Sweden and they may make a trade

Halpern wasnt bad at all, good 4th line role guy, Montreal had him before I believe.

Rangers bottom 6 is about to get a serious shakeup

The Rangers must be up to something...this seems very strange for them??

Good pickup for the Habs, fills a need...

I love this pickup. I really liked Halpern when he was hear and I was disappointed to see him go in 2011. Good low risk pickup that helps fill in the teams needs(faceoffs) whats not to like

its a good pick up but i would have liked Bergy to get a decent
big gritty player that can play hockey but that can help Prust on the
fighting and physical side.
i know that we don't just want a goon but we can use a little weight
on our 4th line since Moen isn't contributing..
if Mtl goes vs Leafs in playoffs its not Halpern that will help
if they start hitting..
i don't want to see players like Gallagher and Gorges fight again..

Yes, but only 7 defenseman.

Roster limit is 23.

We carried an odd number this year, 13 forwards + 8 defenseman. When Weber returns, Tinordi will probably head back down to the AHL too.

Excellent add by the Habs. Guys like him are worth their weight in gold in the postseason.

Absolutely loved him here in Dallas, and is still one of my favorite players. Wish we could've got him.

Halpern was really good for the Habs 2 years ago, but that's 2 years at a pretty critical point in a veteran players' career... seems like he has only deteriorated since then. But still, unless you're in Gabriel Dumont's family, it can't hurt for the Habs. Depth for free. Dumont looked pretty decent and will probably have that job next season. He probably could have handled it the rest of this season too. But that's "probably". Halpern is a more proven commodity. Sounds like a decent pickup for the Habs.
