Thursday is a huge day for the Sabres tank crew.

Montreal @ Buffalo
Ottawa @ Philly
Carolina @ Washington
Pittsburgh @ Tampa Bay
Florida @ WPG
St. Louis @ MIN

Wednesdays game Phoenix @ Edmonton is also very important

A Buffalo loss with a Philly and Tampa Bay win would vault Buffalo to the 5th pick..

This is going to come right down to the wire

Sadly, I figured this was bound to happen. Miller had another red-hot stretch in him (.945 over his last four starts) and with the all the home games down the stretch (10 of our final 14 in Buffalo), I figured we'd be banking loser points and shootout wins.

That notwithstanding, I was hoping we could stay in the top-6, but Carolina's epic tank combined with Nashville and Tampa spinning their wheels have really thrown a fly in the ointment. At this point, I'm fully expecting Lehtonen to get one of his patented groin injuries and Dallas to shut him down, then they'll go sinking past us, as well.
And we got just that last night. I fully expect Dallas to get shelled now without Lehtonen in the lineup. The Stars must've been unhappy with how their tank was going after three straight wins.

Carolina makes me jealous of their tanking abilities. 1-9-0 in their last 10 and 6 straight losses.

Not to mention they already have two established centers to build around for the next 5 years. This is one team/organiziation I see sneaking in to grab a top 5 pick, then becoming instantly competitive again next year.

Nichushkin has moved up to second in some mock drafts.

I never thought I'd say this but, Philly better get their act together. Along with Florida. Brennan needs to take some target practice to get them some PP goals.

That'd be a dream come true if we were sitting there at #7 and Barkov, Lindholm, and Monahan were all still on the board.

Nichushkin could very well slip - due to the uncertainty that his 3-year KHL contract brings. Should be interesting to see if he's still on the board at 7 or 8 when we'll likely pick.

Nichuskin is going to drop like a rock come draft day. I can't see any teams out there that are picking in the top 12 or so that want to use a pick in such a great draft on him. At least not after watching Washington have to deal with Kuznetsov.

You're looking at potentially having to wait 2 years for him to even be able to come over to the NHL and then another 2 for him to adjust to the game over here.

Wouldn't be suprised if he is there with MIN pick, huge flight risk

In that case, you really have to pick him. Being able to get whatever we get with our own pick and then add a massive wildcard to that mix, it's well worth the risk. Organization is desperate for high-end talent, can't pass it up at 20-something overall. That said, I doubt he drops out of the top 15, but who knows. I do agree that he's likely to plummet down (or more accurately already be down) most teams draft boards with respect to where some lists have him, but I suspect there are teams out there unwilling to let him slip by if they're picking say 10th, 11th.

I know they're mostly useless, but for the sake of clarity would anyone be willing to provide player comparables fot the top 10-15?

In an effort to humiliate the Sabres, both the Canes and the Devils have abandoned their Cup quest to show how you really tank.

It is quite the clinic.

If they organization was truly hoping for a collapse or "tank" job ... You'd think they'd shut Vanek down for the year.

The Jets game may have proven otherwise.

Coach/GM: "Thomas, how's that (fill in injury here)?"
TV: "It's getting better, but I'm not in game condition yet"
Coach/GM: "We think you're ready"
TV: "I don't think so"
Coach/GM: "We do"
TV: "I don't "
Coach/GM: "We do"
TV: "I don't think I'm ready"
Coach/GM: "Have a good game"

FINAL: Jets 4, Sabres 1
Thomas Vanek -4

My best guess

1) Seth Jones - Hard to compare; mix of Lidstrom/Suter
2) Nate MacKinnon - Kovalchuk/Crosby with less flash and more grit
3) Jonathan Drouin - St. Louis/Kane/Giroux
4) Alexsander Barkov - Eric Staal
5) Sean Monahan - Jonathan Toews
6) Elias Lindholm - Nicklas Backstrom
7) Darnell Nurse - Shea Weber/Pronger, with a developing Offensive game
8) Rasmus Ristolainen - Brent Seabrook
9) Hunter Shinkaruk - Poor man's Pat Kane
10) Valeri Nichushkin - Rick Nash
11) Zach Fucale - Carey Price
12) Max Domi - Kris Versteeg
13) Bo Horvat - More skilled Steve Ott, can play any foward position in lineup
14) Curtis Lazar - Another Steve Ott prototype with more offense
15) Nikita Zadarov - Robyn Regehr

The ISS has been known to heavily favor Russians.

Quote:
Nichushkin at 2
Zadarov at 6
Zykov at 15
Those are all slight to fairly big jumps then where most others would assume them to be. It's not a terrible list, but there are definitely some big question marks in their rankings.

And for those questioning about Nichushkin, he will most definitely be a top 10 pick. The size, skill, and talent are just too good to pass up on. Teams will do their do diligence and they'll gauge how serious he is about the NHL. Tarasenko was the same way in his draft year, everyone was afraid of the "Russian Factor" but Tarasenko was always saying he wanted to play in the NHL. Malkin also was the same way, picked 2nd in 2004, didn't come over to play till 2006. I'm sure everyone would gladly wait a couple years if they knew they were getting a Malkin. So ya, Nichushkin may stay in Russia for the next two years, but when he comes over after that, who ever was smart enough to pick him will have a game-breaker.

Best guess at how it may go is:

1) Colorado - Seth Jones
2) Calgary - Nate MacKinnon
3) Florida - Jonathan Drouin
4) Carolina - Could go Barkov/Nurse/Nichuskin

The Sabres pick would be anywhere from 5-10 most likely, so you're choosing from Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm, Nurse, Nichushkin, Ristolainen, Shinkaruk, etc.

Other teams that we could be competing against

1)Philly is pretty set at Center and needs D help, so they'd most likely go Nurse or Ristolainen, or are a possible trade target

2)Nashville needs Centers so they would most likely choose between Barkov, Monahan, and Lindholm

3)Tampa needs wingers and D so they could target Nichushkin, Nurse, Ristolainen, Shinkaruk, etc

4)Edmonton needs D and physical players. Nurse, Ristolainen, Zadarov, or Monahan would be their targets

TP: So, you say it's better to lose games and improve our draft position?
DR: Absolutely. I'll try to trade off some of our veteran D and maybe even our captain as we approach the deadline.
TP: Sounds promising, but how are you so sure that will work?
DR: I left out the most ingenious part! We will sit our best player!
TP: Ah yes, Thomas is banged up pretty often, people probably won't question it...
DR: Exactl...wait, what? Vanek? No way, Peggy, I am talking about Leino!

Also on Nichushkin, some scouts had this to say:

http://www.thehockeynews.com/article...NHL-draft.html

Quote:
“As far as talent, he’s top three,” said one scout.

“After watching him, you throw the Russian Factor out the window,” said another.
.
.
.
Along with Nichushkin, the most interesting Russian prospect to watch this year will be Pavel Buchnevich. While Nichushkin lit up scouts’ eyes at the Five Nations, there was less praise for his teammate.

“Stereotypical Russian. Selfish, one-dimensional, yells at his teammates when things aren’t going right,” said one scout. “Very talented player. Someone’s going to take him because of his ability, maybe in the late second round or early third.”

It just won’t be that scout’s team, we can assume. But how many other franchises feel this way? Another checkmark for Nichushkin is that he considered coming over to play major junior this year before Traktor Chelyabinsk offered him a contract extension. If it’s a three-year pact, NHL teams won’t blink; getting him at 20 is no big deal and a contract buyout could always be negotiated with Traktor.

“There is a mitigating circumstance with the Russian Factor,” said one exec. “That’s a whole due diligence process.”

But at least it’s now a familiar one for NHL GMs. And if Nichushkin continues to dazzle, don’t be surprised to see him get selected very high in the draft – exactly where he belongs, regardless of where his passport comes from.
Nichuskin will be a top 10, maybe even top 5 pick.

Doesnt matter, it would be virtually impossible to make up 7 points in 8 games, if we went 0-8 they would need to get 4-4.

Calgary, Colorado and Florida are out of reach for us, with Carolina starting to fall aways behind.

We will be 5-12
