Just going to say this, Stastny isn't a great skater, isn't great defensively but....

Here's Chris Stewarts line

With Stastny
94 pts in 113 games

Without Stastny

50 pts in 105 gams

He makes mediocre forwards really good.

I have been impressed with Gionta. He started out a little shaky against Austria and Lativa but he has really picked up his game since then. He's scored some timely goals and has been valuable on the penalty kill. Against Germany he played more minutes than any US forward save Paul Stastny.

I think some credit has to be given to Joe Sacco (Phil Housley?). Not sure why his Avs teams under-performed, but this U.S. team seems to really be coming together as a team. the special teams in particular look dynamite and he's stuck with a line-up that works.

Housley is running the special teams, as an Avs fan I had to watch a couple games to verify something fishy wasn't going on, but it is not Sacco's system being used here. The cycling and behind the net plays you see at EVS is Sacco.

Galchenyuk centered Butler and Stapleton in practice today. I'd imagine Oshie joins that line as well.

Paulie is very good defensively, not great, but very good. He's also terrific at the dot. I'll tell you this much, put him in an offensive role (he got just 40% of o-zone starts with the Avs) on a line with just decent goalscorers and you'll see that ppg Paulie come back to life.

EJ is playing on the left side of the PP and he looks great (he has better shooting lanes and can get rid of the puck much faster), he didn't play there at all with the Avs. You do the math about who's handling the special teams.

Thanks for the insights. Kudos to Phil Housley then. A true up and coming coach. We'll probably see bounce back seasons next year for both Stastny and EJ.

The international ice is helping him the most imo. He's getting shots off from the right side just fine too.

Good point, but he does look more comfortable on the left where he can take one-timers, he takes longer to set up for the shot when playing the right side IMHO.

The Avs performed right about where they should have based on their talent level.

I sincerely hope that Sacco isn't going to stick with Bishop in our next game.

Lifeless, pathetic effort by the team today, all spearheaded by Bishop. When your goalie gives them 2 goals in the opening 3 minutes, it's not surprising the team looked demoralized the whole game. Bishop has been mediocre at best all tournament but today he just gave the game away.

Usually the team craps out in the QF so hopefully they got the stinker out of the way now. Thankfully we shouldn't see Bishop in goal but I don't like our chances against a Russian team that looks forward to this tournament all year.

Very disappointing result for the team when a berth in the SF was lined up so perfectly.

Very disappointing result. I am glad I didn't wake up early to watch this. I don't like our chances against Russia. But at least the US isn't fighting relegation this year.

Agree hopefully Gibson is the starter going into the quarterfinals.

we just need more high end US players with European roots... that is why a guy like Stastny answers the call and same with Galchenyuk. These guys believe this tournament is important as they have family still in foreign countries that probably chirp on them to play in this thing!!

So who else do we have coming that has European roots??? Anders Lee?? hahaha

some will call Nick Bjugstad another one as well...

Embarrassing display of goaltending by Bishop today. Might've cost us a chance to medal.

Finnish newspapers reporting that at least Bobby Butler and Nate Thompson had been out partying late into last night

I'd be partying it up too if I got a free trip to Helsinki/Stockholm to play hockey.
