Atlanta Thrashers "Casino Night" from 2010 - True North needs to do this, stat!

While looking for a picture of a young Toby Enstrom to see if he looked like his younger hockey playing sister Tina (short answer: creepily similar), I came across this blog post:

http://ukyoandsmocat.com/thrashers/011010/011010.htm

All the (then) Thrashers got snazzed up and dealt cards for a charity fund-raiser "fun money" casino night. Free hors d'oeuvres and cocktails -- and as you can see from the photographic evidence, they clearly allowed the staff to indulge in a cocktail or two of their own.

Anyways -- based on the blog itself, it looks like an absolute blast was had by all, and I think True North needs to do one of these this offseason. They could even get Claude Noel to be the pit boss, to stand in the middle and scowl at everyone. But, could such a thing go off in Winnipeg as successfully as it did in Atlanta? Part of me wonders if Winnipeg is too small of a town / too much of a fishbowl to get away with having their players clearly enjoying themselves over a few cocktails for a fund raiser. I can only imagine what the Paul Friesen headline would read the next day. "JETS PLAYERS SWINDLE LOCAL GAMBLERS IN DRUNKEN STUPOR" or some such.

Maybe the much-more knowledgeable hockey crowd in Winnipeg might make such an event difficult to pull off? I'd hate to see someone get thrown out for heckling Olli Jokinen in a half-drunken stupor.. "NO SSSHRRISHLY, HOW DO YOU SAY 'BUYER'S REMORSH' IN FINNISH?"

Thoughts?

That was actually an annual fundraising event.

People will rarely say the same rude things to a hockey players face that they will yell out from the stands or post on a message board. Almost never.

Pretty cool. It's very clear Slater is probably the most fan friendly Jet there is. Other teams have some sort of player convention, I forget what they're called. It will probably be a few years before one happens here.

In their contracts they're obligated to make two volunteer appearances. Maybe that has changed in the new CBA, I don't know.

Very cool.
I think it'd be a big hit here.
Demand to attend would be crazy.

You know, I'm not one to criticize ol' Hockey Related Ron for being lazy, but is it really THAT HARD to shave if you're going to be putting on a tuxedo?

Eh, it's a fine line to me. Being a big pro wrestling fan myself, I always try and use that as my guideline, in terms of criticism being "in character" versus "out of character". When I'm screaming at Nik Antropov for being shiftless and lazy for drifting around like jetsam in the ocean, that's a fan screaming at an athlete. When I'd go to an event like this and say the same thing to him, that's much more personal and a totally different setting.

I'd have to give a nod to Thorburn too. Not just from what this woman mentions with him being very personable at this event, but from personal experience -- he was at Pembina Chrysler signing jerseys and signs on THE day that jerseys were being given out at the Jets Gear Store for those who ordered them, so he was actually kind of comically all alone with a sign reading "Chris Thorburn, Winnipeg Jets" taped to the desk. A couple kids came up and talked to him and he was very friendly.. "Look for me on TV, I might score a goal. Well, I might not.. but if I do, you'll know it's me, just look for the nose!" etc.

Exactly. I can only imagine how much money they'd raise in this town. And there is no shortage of classy places they could hold it at.

They could never do something like this unless entry tickets were capped and EXPENSIVE. You'd have 50,000 people knocking the casino doors down to get in. I've heard they would love to do something like the old Jets winter carnivals but when you have an entire city showing up it's kind of tough.

Shouldn't be a problem making it uber-expensive if it's for charity.

Exactly. The demand for such a thing would be a good thing. If Atlanta ran it for $200/$150 3 years ago, you could easily make it $500/$400 and get the right sized crowd.

The Moose used to do something similar with their annual "Moose Yearling" foundation events.

The Jets used to hold annual fundraising events for the "Goals For Kids" foundation as well.

Surely TNSE will eventually hold similar annual events.

Man, I forgot what a fatty Lehts was. What was with the Thrashers and fat goalies? Fun franchise fact: Pasi Nurminen, one of my favorite Thrashers, was nicknamed Cartman.

Nurm's career ending injury was every bit as damning to the franchise as Dan's tragedy. He and Lehts would have made a nice tandem.
