Flyers sign Kyle Flanagan(1 year-1 way 2014)

https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/s...03758437482499

Quote:
SLU grad Kyle Flanagan (UFA) agreed to terms on contract with PHI. Will report Friday to ADK (AHL) on ATO. 1 yr NHL deal for next season.
Yep that guy. Have no clue about him. Any cawledge hockey people know about him?

To the Google Machine

http://blogs.courierpostonline.com/f...kyle-flanagan/

Quote:
Flanagan signed a one-year deal with the Flyers, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, and will sign a professional tryout with the Adirondack Phantoms for the rest of this season. Flanagan’s contract with the Flyers won’t pick up until next season.

At 5-foot-9 and 179 pounds, the undersized forward is a curious signing. The Flyers probably won’t have room for them on their NHL roster next season and only a couple forwards deeper in their system are set to become restricted free agents this summer (Shane Harper, Eric Wellwood and Mitch Wahl).

Congrats to you guys.

24 yrs old.

5'9" 179 lbs (hockeydb)

Seems like a playmaker rather than a goal scorer judging by his stats.

Thanks to Fitzy, we have a scouting report:

"Kyle Flanagan was knocked on his ass off the faceoff of the first shift of his first NCAA game. Undersized, sometimes teammates would joke on twitter when there was a windstorm that he might fly away. But the kid has a hockey brain a mile wide. Give him time and space, and he will shred you with passes, excellent pivotal skating, and surprisingly good hands around the net. He has gained some muscle this year, still doesn't have too much mustard on his shot but he isn't getting planted into the boards nearly as much as he used to. He started his career as a LW on Bogosian's line, but the past two years he has been centering Greg Carey.

If Carey had Flanagan's hockey sense, he would have been a first round pick. If Flanagan had Carey's (note: he's talking about Greg Carey, another NCAA UFA) build, he would've been as well. Flanagan reminds me a bit of PA Parenteau."

His coach this season at the University was former Sens assistant Greg Carvel. Carvel insists he thinks he will be an NHL player in some capacity because of how smart a hockey player he is.

If I was to pick a comparison, somewhere between PA Parenteau and Mats Zuccarello. He does best when he has time and space to operate, especially on the power play.

And now hes going to be wearing a Flyers unform... had to be a rival.

It might take him awhile to get used to the pro game with his size, but the fact they gave him a 1 way deal suggest to me the Flyer's FO thinks he can make the roster next season.

Nice. Hopefully this isn't the last college signing.

With this signing we are at 52 contracts with 3 being sliders I believe. We have room for one more signing unless we move some players.

I like players with hockey sense, and Flanagan seems to have it.

I have 0 issues with this signing.

They hit a HR on Read; hopefully they hit another one with Flanagan.

With the Phantoms needing all the help they can get, I can't wait to see what he can do on their top line.

Crossing my fingers that he can fit right in on opening day next year

This is a one way deal. He's going to be on the roster next year, or waived. Is this correct for those cap guys out there?

EDIT: Meltzer says he is waiver exempt next year.

I'll give management the benefit of the doubt with this one. They've probably had more success than any other team in the league lately in finding college free agents under the radar.

Sounds like it. If it's assuming that he's 25 next season, having signed the contract then, then he's not exempt from waivers.

Is the ELC term a change in the new CBA? Read is on a 3-year ELC, but this guy is only on a 1-year ELC, although I think he would be a year older than Read was, so it might not be.

They have a lot of openings for next season. He has a contract for next season and an ATO with the phantoms. ATOs don't count towards the roster

Now one thing going against Flanagan is his height...kid has good smarts and skill though. According to twitter his coaches and teammates say he is defensively aware. Thats a very good thing. Time to see how he does.

Thanks for this, Fitzy. He even has the Brière sliding fist pump. I was impressed he wears the C. Call me a sizeist, but that stands out for me with him being 5'9".
