Probably 7 million or less since he is objectively not as good.

If it's the Semin from Washington Capitals, this is an overpayment. If it's the Semin that the Canes' fans are claiming to be, then it's a fair deal.

Risky move for the Canes, but I wish Semin and the organization the best luck in future years.
They're the same Semin. If anything caps' Semin was better half the time here, offensively at least. It's the perception that changed radically.

I kinda wanna see Green traded to some team no one hates just for hf to wise up that he's an elite player.

Damn, so much money. 100% worth it if he plays like he has been in Carolina all year. Not worth it if he plays like he did in Washington. In the end, I think carolina will get their money's worth, dude has mad skills.

Glad to see him get the money, but seems a bit overpaid, however if they think the cap is going up after next year, then it's fine I guess.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want him back with caps!
I hate Makfi. All what Semin needs is a legit center to play with. But Makfi didn't do it all Semin's Washington tenure.

Man Semin has really cashed in playing in the NHL. By the time this contract is over he will have made over $65 million total, will only be 34 years old and the majority of that salary was made in a 10 year span. I always wondered if these risky one year deals were the right thing to do, but props to him and his agent. It got him the most money in the short term and turned into this monster long term deal!

Ignorance is bliss I guess. Semin hasn't changed the way he plays. The difference is the team and opportunity.

Ok, but you would be taking the worse player in that case. Semin not only has better career numbers than them, he is vastly outperforming them this season and hasn't had the opportunity they have had until now. He is a better player than all 4 of them and he's on a better deal.

Nash you can argue either way (though Semin has put up better career numbers and is great at defense), Kessel you can't really argue as being superior without doing an insane amount of projections and flat out disregarding what each player has been so far in their career.

Why would the Canes feel the need to rush, 30 games is a super small sample size despite the good track record. I would not make a long term commitment to someone who has been inconsistent prior to the season, and is playing on a line with a world class player in Staal and a forward who caught fire in Tlusty.

Bobrovsky and Crawford are not the 3rd and 4th best goalies in the NHL.

Chris Kunitz is not the third best offensive player in the NHL.

Nazem Kadri is not a top 10 forward.

RNH is not a 5 goal, 30 point forward.

Small sample size, but his past would indicate he is at the minimum a 60-65 point forward in the right scenario. However, would one pay 7M a year for 5 years for a 29 Alexander Semin with the cap decreasing (forward peaks are typically 25-28) ? If the cap was continuously increasing, then this contract would definitely not be an issue.

Cap is decreasing next year then most likely rocketing back up unless people suddenly decide they stopped liking hockey.

Forward peaks vary based on a ton of things. Physical guys peak earlier, highly cerebral guys like Datsyuk peak later and continue to be high end players through their 30. Prime is accepted as something like 27-32. Even if he's peaked already chances that Semin is worn down at 34 are really slim.

He's averaged .87 PPG in his career (71p/82gp pace) and that's with a throwaway rookie year and 2 years under a very defense heavy system with bad linemates. If Carolina continues to play him with Staal/capable offensive players and they don't kill neuter their system 70-80 points a year is pretty logical.

I think it's a pretty fair deal. And lets be honest, someone would have paid him this much money and maybe even a tad bit more on the free agent market.

Fair deal for the Canes.

7 million for one of the most talented players in the world is a bargain.

However 7 million for a headcase is a huge albatross.

Hope the Canes get the former and not the latter.

Fair deal given his production. Has some risk--as many multi-year deals do--but not excessively so imo.

I think he's worth 7, and may be worth that over 5 years, but I don't see why Carolina commits this long term with the guy. There's little to no chance he becomes a "steal" at that price. They paid market value long term.

I assume Semin wouldn't take a shorter term, and Carolina gave in because he's been worth every penny so far.

JR always pays market value plus to get his "guys". Hence Jordan Staal overpayment

Not out of line with a player of that calibre at all, in fact may less per than he could have gotten on the open market( Could have gotten 7.5, maybe 8 per on shorter term deal)That said, I'm floored at the five years.
