If it had been 6.85, no one would have batted an eyelash, excepting the haters, of course.

7 million annually seems to be an artificial threshold at which fans think players should be truly elite to get that salary. Semin isn't truly elite. Would I rather have Kesler at 5 or Eriksson at 4.25, sure! But is it silly to pay a .8 ppg guy 35m/5y when guys like that aren't coming available on the market? No it is not. That's less than what Vanek gets, its a steal compared to Parise and is .9 less than Hossa who is just as injured. Its what D. Sedin would get if he weren't on a sweetheart deal. I don't think its so nuts. Good for Carolina and good for the very underrated (by HF) Alex Semin.

Happy for Canes. Nice forward core. Now round it out with some defence and you've got a solid team.

I'd rather not have Semin at all than be paying him 7 during his 30,31,32,33,34 year old seasons. So no, definitely not jealousy.

In fact my original post was, "Kessel just smiled". Carolina fans decided to have fun with it and pretend Semin is better.

he is more of a 6M per but seeing him change his style of play and doing it well with eric staal warrants this type of signing. plus as a fall back he still has a great shot.

Ya I know but he is Russian so he of course he will be criticized, even though this year he has done nothing but squash the negative perceptions imo. If it's 6.5 no one says anything but 500k more and it's OMG over payment people don't take the new CBA into account. Also most people are just jealous and upset cause he won't make it to Free Agency.

Kessel has scored 30 or more goals in the last 4 years. Semin has done it twice in the last four, and hasn't gotten to 30 since his 40+ goal season.

Defensive play, I am fine with that.

Physical play? Whoopdee doo. Neither of them are overly physical, so what difference does that make?

Semin is having a great year, but man people have been wanting to bash Kessel ever since he has been traded.
Since we can't really compare them by what Kessel will/will not be in 4 years it makes sense to compare them based on what they have been up until this point. Also, if you wanna use the not in prime argument, Semin had a pair of 70+ point seasons before he was 26.

Semin has accomplished more offensively.

Semin is better defensively.

Semin is better right now.

It's not bashing as much as stating that one player has shown to be better so far. I don't see why this is so objectionable.

Far worse, actually. With Kessel, the main blame has been on laid on Burke and that iconic trade. With Semin, a few people in the media had really tried hard to cultivate an artificially negative picture of him, and many just ate that up. I thought that was way worse than Kessel being blamed for having been traded for picks that turned out to be more valuable than anticipated.

Semin has pretty good underlying stats. Underrated defensively. 7m sounds about right. Right up there with what Kessel will likely get as well.

Man oh man I hope Kess takes a hometown discount

The deal is fair... the first 2-3 seasons at least. Semin is a game breaker and is a legitimate top line player... top line players get 7 million lol. If he isn't motivated in year 4 or 5 then maybe it won't be the best signing but it's 5 years not 8. Good signing, good for Carolina. They got a top liner for free and they locked him up

The .87 career PPG defensively sound Semin?

Do people think he was a 40 point winger in Washington and just got lucky this year or something?

Kessel was the victim of this because he was the player who was valued as two first round picks, and for people to disapprove of Burke's move they had to disapprove of Kessel's play and production.

They are a package deal, really.

I feel like wingers that get this type of salary usually get viewed as bad contracts... See Gaborik/Heatley/Nash/Vanek as examples.

Yeah, what would they know about Semin?

They only watched him for 7 seasons. Pfft, that's nothing. Canes fans have watched him for 30 games.

We might as well start calling every player in the league a Selke candidate.
