The Hockey News "Future Watch" 2013 Discussion

It's getting to be that time of year again. We're approximately 6 weeks from the magazine getting shipped out to subscribers (then on newsstands early March), so I'd imagine they will start working on it soon. They do the majority of the write-ups immediately after the WJC.

Remember, age doesn't matter when it comes to Future Watch. As long as the player isn't considered an NHL regular at the time of printing, they're considered a prospect for FW. This is why sometimes you'll see a player who is 24 or 25 on a teams list.

edit: It appears as though young NHL players (such as Tarasenko, Yakupov, Galchenyuk) will appear on this years list, due to the messy lockout situation.

To remind everyone: Each teams list is provided by a member of the actual organization, whether it be a scout, GM, assistant GM, etc..

Anyone want to take a stab at the top 5 or 10 prospects overall this year? Top 5 for your team?

Straight from the magazine on how the rankings are determined:

Quote:
It starts with The Hockey News consulting with each NHL team to determine an order of the top prospects in that organization. Once a master list of 30 top 10's is established, we ask the talent evaluators to rank the top 50 prospects from the 300 candidates with a five to ten year projected outlook. 15 scouts participated in this year's exercise and a spreadsheet does the number crunching. The voting system is weighted to give the top 10 prospects sequentially more balloting points than those prospects ranked 11-50.

edit: February 22nd:

Quote:
Just got my digital copy through zinio. Print copy should arrive any day!

Dougie Hamilton on the cover.

Top 10 prospects:

1. Vladimir Tarasenko
2. Justin Schultz
3. Evgeni Kuznetsov
4. Dougie Hamilton
5. Nail Yakupov
6. Alex Galchenyuk
7. Mikael Granlund
8. Johnathan Huberdeau
9. Ryan Murray
10. Jacob Trouba

Just a reminder, we have to be careful with the posting of information, as it is copyrighted. So, please don't ask for so and so's top 10, or the top 50 prospects etc.. If you're interested, I'd recommend picking up a copy, or buying it digitally..it's only a few bucks.

Submitted by the Oilers org though, so I would be surprised if they list anyone above the guy they just drafted first overall. I like the list though.

Vancouver canucks

something like this

1. Nicklas Jensen, Left Wing
2. Brendan Gaunce, Center
3. Frankie Corrado, Defense
4. Kevin Connauton, Defense
5. Jordan Schroeder, Center
6. Anton Rodin, Left Wing
7. Patrick McNally, Defense
8. Eddie Lack, Goaltender
9. Joseph LaBate, Center
10. Alexandre Grenier, Right Wing

After Corrado though I really doubt the other 7 players add up to an NHL pnesion in terms of games played (400 glames)

Maybe I'm completely off, but i cannot see Elliott being Colorado's #1 prospect over Barrie.

Hasn't he been having a pretty bad season to date?

Switch Faksa and Eakin IMO. Also lacking Campbell.

I don't think he was ever "bad", but started off very slow. Though lately he has been on fire and is regaining his flare from last season. Avs fans still consider him as the prospect with the most potential besides Hishon.

1. Mark Scheifele
2. Jacob Trouba
3. Adam Lowry
4. Paul Postma
5. Zach Redmond
6. Scott Kosmachuk
7. Eric O'Dell
8. Ivan Telegin
9. Carl Klingberg
10. Lukas Sutter

Big drop off after number two and another big one after number six. The Jets have a very shallow pool, lots of future role players but few top six forwards or top pairing defencemen.

1. Smith
2. Nyquist

3. Tatar
4. Jarnkrok
5. Ouellet
6. Mrazek
7. Jurco/Sproul

Bolded names are pending an NHL season. Both will be regulars if there's hockey.

EDIT: And after ranking those guys I'm realizing just how damn good Detroit's pool is...

My list is a little different but add Ferraro and Sheahan and that's what I expect the top10 to potentially be.

I weighted a lot of it based on who was NHL ready. That's why Tatar was over Jarnkrok and why Mrazek was so low.

Pretty solid list. It's nice to see the solid improvement in drafting under Feaster & Weisbrod.
My list would look the same.

Buffalo:
1) Mikhail Grigorenko, C
2) Joel Armia, RW
3) Mark Pysyk, D
4) Marcus Foligno, LW
5) Zemgus Girgensons, C/LW
6) Daniel Catenacci, C
7) Brayden McNabb, D
8) T.J. Brennan, D
9) Jake McCabe, D
10) Corey Tropp, RW

Could maybe see Tropp a few spots higher (season-ending injury hurts him though), and Jerome Gauthier-Leduc or Connor Knapp sneaking on the list somewhere.
