Yes Al Arbour is certainly the first to come to mind for all Isles fans and most hockey fans. He actually retired then came back to coach the Isles for a season or two then retired again.

Claude Noel has yet to be fired, he just keeps moving around. CBJ simply didn't renew his contract after he took over for Hitchcock.

I'm curious about this too. He left the Wild to retire (then came back and coached NJ for a bit again) but I don't think he's ever actually been fired.

He was fired by 2/3 of the league. I was hoping the sports joke was obvious.

That's pretty much the same thing, though.

Yet he leads a poll here for the best coach of the NHL. That's saying something.

Maybe, but Hitch also hired him. Usually when a head coach is let go, the people he hired are let go as well.

No, he stepped down at the end of the season and was replaced by Perron (They won the cup the following year).

Pretty sure he quit because the groups that were bidding on the team after bankruptcy said they weren't going to keep him on.

That's actually not true. That's only true when they hire from the outside. The NHL has a tendency to promote a lot of assistants after firing a coach which basically means the staff remains the same.

In Noel's case he was never actually the head coach, he was an assistant acting as head coach until a replacement could be found.

How did Lemaire come about leaving the devils in his first stint?

Mario Tremblay was not fired (resigned)

I'm assuming all these interim coaches don't count? What about guys who had the dual role and fired themselves as head coaches such as Gainey hiring hitchcock or Bryan Murray hiring John Paddock?

The Flyers demoted Wayne Cashman to assistant coach, does that count?

Brent Sutter was the first to come to mind, he asked permission to leave NJ in 2009 and had his contract not renewed in CGY after 2012.

Don't think Toe Blake or Dick Irvin were ever fired.
