Should the Panthers Pick Up Jussi Jokinen Off Waivers?

Darren Dreger just reported that Carolina placed him on waivers (not sure why): https://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/sta...81378378579968

He's 29 years old, has one more year of a $3m contract, has 5 goals and 5 assists so far and can be a pretty solid two way center. Given that we are bound to trade away so much salary at the trade deadline anyways, picking him up wouldn't put us back financially or cap-wise.

Even though he's a center and it looks like we will have some problems on the wings next season, it never hurts to have another centerman, especially since I believe that we trade Goc at the deadline, and who knows what will happen to Weiss.

Thoughts?

Yeah, you're probably right, Yahoo has him at center: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/3021

NHL has him on the wing: http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8469638

I think he's a tempting guy to add but I don't see Tallon adding salary. I would be surprised if he goes unclaimed.

The season is in the toilet. No need to add at this point

Depends on who he wants to move in trade, I guess.

Is he still a specialist in the shootout?

He used to fool lots of goalies when they weren't accustomed to facing the Forsberg deke. I think everyone has him scouted now. He's a got a quick release which also ups the probability of a scoring chance. So, Jokinen's got the quick shot, the Forsberg drag move and the backhand (I could be wrong about his backhand). He's a good shootout player but not a specialist, IMO.

If we wanted to pick him up, we would get him due to how waivers work.

Jokinen is like Kopecky, a natural winger but can play center if needed. Wouldn't recommend it thou.

Pass, unless Tallon has a deal worked out for trading Flash or Versteeg in the next 12 hours.
