Stanley Cup Champions 2010 vs 2013

The similarities between 2010 abd 2013 were numerous, right down to the most feared team, imo, Penguins, not getting to the finals and our goaltending looking poor in spots but overall excellent, especially when it counted the most. and there were many other situations that were eerily similar throughout.

I wouldn't dare speak of it during this amazing run in the post season, but I sure wanted to. The parallels between 2010 and 2013 were uncanny throughout these playoffs... and sure enough we won again in stunning fashion late in the game away from home in game 6. Anyone else feel that but afraid to put on the jinx?

This team is better than the 2010 team. Defensively there is no comparison. 2013 has much better goaltending, much better depth on D (don't forget that our third D pair in 2010 was Brent Sopel and Nick Boynton/Jordan Hendry), and one of the very best bottom-sixes in the league. In the top-six, the makeup is a very similar look, with Bickell in the place of Byfuglien on the top line. Toews, Kane, Hossa, and Sharp are all still there, but Sharp is playing his natural position of wing instead of center.

I think you're right. Sharp was better, BB was pretty close to as good as Buff, and the D was way better, as was Crawford.

One thing about 2010, outside of Ladd's broken shoulder against SJ and I think a knee sprain for Hossa, that team was relatively healthy.

On a scale of 1 - 10

2010
Forwards 11
Defense 7
Goaltending 7
Total 25

2013
Forwards 8
Defense 9
Goaltending 9
Total 26

I definitely loved the 2010 team way more, and waiting 18 years between Cup appearances made it way more amazing than waiting 4 years between Cup victories. But overall the 2013 team was a tad better.

Was going to post the same thing, 2010 was a very healthy squad.

Hawks beat 3 Stanley Cup champions to win the Cup this year. Incredible.

To put it better the Hawks beat the 3 other teams to win the Cup in the last 5 years to win the Cup. Wings 09, Kings 12, Bruins 11.

I wouldn't put goaltending as way better then 10. I think Crawford had a better year but I think the team defense had something to do with that, not everything but something.

Niemi was a Vezina finalist so he isn't exactly a bad goalie.

I would take the 2010 team over the 2013 team every time. 2010 will go down as one of the best teams in the cap era.

You're trying to compare 2013 Niemi to 2013 Crawford, and that's not what we're doing here. Niemi is a 2013 Vezina finalist, but he wasn't in 2010 when he won the Cup. He was good, sure, but only just "good enough" to win it back then. Nothing that knocked your socks off. Crawford's numbers in this Cup run crush Niemi's in 2010. If Niemi had been that good in 2010, the Hawks would not have walked away from him at the arbitration hearing. He was replaceable.

I also firmly believe that the 2010 team would not have beaten the 2013 Bruins. The 2010 Flyers were on a nice little Cinderella run but they had no real business being in the Cup Final that year. Kind of like the Devils last year. Playing way above their heads. Not bad teams, just not on the same level as this year's Bruins.

2010 was deeper upfront and had a lot of personality and will always hold special spot for being team to finally win it

2013 had much better D and goaltending though

You mean the team that was $4+ million over the cap and had to be gutted because of it? Yeah that's a great example of the cap era right there. It was only due to some very creative accounting that that team was able to be put together at all. I like the one we got now purely based on value.

Creative accounting or Tallon sending the QOs on time?

One thing for sure is Boston was a much better team and tougher matchup than Philly was. Much better goaltender, to boot.

The 2010 win was more exhilarating, but this win was more satisfying to me.

So many fluky things about the 2010 team with so many guys on ELCs or initial extensions and 3 big gambles on FAs and a goalie few really knew anything about. This team was more deliberately constructed and played another well constructed team and won in the finals. I thought the 2010 finals matchup was a little more random than this one. This series was much more exciting start to finish.

This team put so many reg season records in the books, I think they have to be labeled as better. I thought they had fewer questions going into the year, I was more confident about this team compared to the 2010 team.

Have to appreciate both teams and their differences and similarities.

Going through Detroit, Sutter's cup champs, and then beating another big-boy club in the finals will probably have me appreciate this one more when I look back on it 10 years even though 2010 was a more significant Cup win.

I didn't really intend to compare the 2 teams personnel, but rather the fate that got us there.
Just to name a few, both years we:
- faltered early and looked like we were going down but rallied and got stronger as the PO's progressed
- faced a tough physical team from the East and some questioned whether we could stand up physically (myself included both times)
-the ops team had a dominant and physical dman that played more than half of each game and always against our best line (not to mention he got away with murder in front of his goalies crease)
-Q promoted a big presence to help out Toews/Kane and that player played (surprisingly) well; they not only were very physical and able to neutralize that big dman, but both were in the running for the Conn Smythe
-our goaltending shone when it mattered the most

And there are more. The hockey gods seemed to shine on us in a similar fashion in both cases. Not saying luck played a major role but we easily could be facing a game 7 on Wednesday, as was the case in 2010, but we didn't let that happen. Well done Blackhawks.

Beating three of the past five Champions enroute to this one is special. Going through Detroit and knocking them off head-to-head in the final chance to do so was pretty cool. Finally taking big brother out was nice.

Hate to compare them because both teams were special and the best in the NHL. 2010 had a little bit better forwards but the 2013 defense if deeper and better (no scrubs) and 2013 Craw is easily at least equal to 2010 Niemi.

One of the nice things about this win is hopefully we won't have to hear anymore of the reminiscing about the depth players on the 2010 team and the 85 Bear-ish stroking of them.

don't want to compare them. They were build about the same and both teams haven't had a true #2 Center, both had the same core and both had the same coach

I posted this on the Canucks board last night comparing the two endings... not the teams:

Quote:
What a complete polar opposite ending to the Blackhawks previous Championship.

2010- The most anti climatic end to the finals I can remember. Not the play by play guy, not the colour guy, not the fans in the rink , not the millions of people watching..... no one knew it was over for at least a good 1.5 / 2 seconds after the fact, and in televised sports land thats a lot of time. For a brief moment in time Kane was the only person on the planet that knew the Chicago Black Hawks had just won the Cup..... regaardless, it was only a matter of until Philly and their three goalies got eliminated.

2013- This was a real series with an unreal ending. If you picked the wrong 17 seconds to go pee you might have missed the whole game..... And for Boston to lose in a similar fashion to Leafs? Well, the ironing is delicious.

One for the ages for sure.

Yeah, we got the Hollywood ending we wished we would have had last time, what a game.
