Weird comparison..... I usually go with the center when production is similar.

Would rather keep Stepan. Can't stand Parenteau or his face.

Avs fan who thinks Stepan's a better all-round player even if he hasn't improved much since his rookie season. Parenteau's good for offense. I'd say neither should be used beyond 2nd line minutes in the playoffs unless you get a lot of PP time.

Depends if you need a C or W.

PAP and I don't feel like a homer at all, great offensive instincts, fantastic playmaker, underrated scorer and he's good defensively.

That description also describes Stepan perfectly.

Stepan. Absolutely the better player. Also, picking PaP would be too depressing.

You could say the same about Stepan but I think Stepan is better defensively.

Stepan is 22. Parenteau is 30. They have similar production now, but Stepan has upside whereas Parenteau is at his peak. How is this even close?

Center vs. winger. Not sure I understand the comparison, but Stepan is the better player. Only 22 years old. Has the potential to become one of the better two-way centers in the game.

lol, the 22 year old who is just starting to break out in the NHL and will be a consistent 60-70 point scorer for the next decade who plays very good 2 way hockey , or the 30 year old?

I don't think this is a fair or accurate way of framing the argument.

Pretty even players, Stepan plays centre so I'm giving the edge to him.

Exactly this.

Surprised to see Stepan winning this honestly, PAP is the better player.

And this is coming from a guy who really wanted Stepan back when Oreilly seemed to be on his way out of Colorado. But PAP is the better player.

I feel like I am taking crazy pills. Every single GM in the league would choose the 22-year-old over the 30-year-old when both players are relatively close in talent currently.

building a team, Stepan.

upgrading a contending team, PAP.

in a vacuum, I'd probably take PAP. A top 10-15 wing is better than a top 25-30 center.

Not sure how well PA will be in the playoffs, 30 years old and he's never played a NHL playoff game. Heck, Stepan has played in 25 already

Well, for one, you made it all about age. Yes, all else being equal a player being 22 is better than a player being 30, but there's a lot more to the equation than that. By that logic, a 22 year old Stepan is worth more than a 30 year old Gordie Howe, because you've totally discounted everything that the 30 year old brings to the table. Also, you made a lot of assumptions about how Stepan will progress. To say he'll be a consistent 60-70 point 1C is a lofty projection. Remember when it looked like that was Dubinsky's future?

As is, we are comparing a 22 year old center who had a 51 point season last year and looks to be making a step forward this year (in a shortened season) to a 30 year old winger who put together a 67 point season playing on Tavares' wing last year and is at a PPG this year. It's a bit of a weird comparison. I'm certainly happier with Stepan on the Rangers than PAP. I honestly believe that Parenteau is a "bad team" scorer and that he would never put up big points on the Rangers. With that said, there are legitimate points in his favor.
