Kent Nilsson (still helping Calgary today)

Yes. I'm a Montreal Canadiens fan from Ontario. However, I am also a devout hockey fanatic. Who enjoys the great history and trivia of the game.

Some of you may not be old enough to remember Kent Nilsson. He was a very gifted player. Slick. Three 40+ goal seasons with the Atlanta/Calgary franchise. On the negative side. Nilsson was also softer than a sponge.

I digress. In 1985, Nilsson was traded to the (old) Minnesota North Stars for two second round picks. That being Joe Nieuwendyk (1985) and Stephane Matteau (1987).

A decade later. Nieuwendyk, as we all know, was dealt to Dallas for a highly touted prospect, Jerome Iginla. An eventual Flames legend.

With all of these rumors swirling about Iginla possibly going elsewhere by the deadline. It's inevitable Calgary will receive good assets in return.

Whoever these players/draft picks may be. Look what Calgary has accumulated since they (Atlanta) drafted Kent Nilsson back in 1976. The legacy will continue.

The king must die at some point, and in place, a prince is made leader.

Hence, the monarchs have failed.

Can you imagine the outcry if Iginla was traded for two second round picks?

That's 2 hall of famers for Kent

Chance of Feaster getting another one is low though

Listening to Maher in the morning - he was remembering first the Nilson trade for two 2nd round picks (one being Joe Niewendyk) and how the headline in the newspaper the following morning was "Joe WHO?"

Then, fast forward to the 95/96 season, and the trade of Niewendyk being announced on the team charter to (from?) Hartford, and Pierre Page commenting at the time "that's a terrible trade for Calgary".

Was just thinking about this last night.

If the hockey gods are real..one of these two prospects surpasses expectations.
