AHL: Berube and Sabourin impress in Monarchs victory

Quote:
One of the marks of a great team is their ability to face and overcome adversity.

Still feeling the effects of NHL call-ups paired with a rash of injuries, the Monarchs turned to new faces to fill out their roster once again.

Can someone explain to me what the hell a Solar Bear is? Is it similar to a Care Bear?

Instead of a polar bear, it's called solar bear since it's in sunny florida.

Just a guess.

I've been on the Berube boat with you. Been a fan since he was drafted. He's looked insanely solid.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't know if you're a local here or not, but LA and Long Beach use to have an IHL team called the ice dogs. What's an ice dog?

AHL: Sabourin scores twice, Monarchs win again

Hockey is a game of ebbs and flows.

After a disappointing start to the season, Scott Sabourin has hit his stride.

Sabourin scores again! Another hard slap shot puts the Monarchs up 1-0 with 27 seconds to go in the 1st.

1-0 Monarchs over the Sharks after 1 in Worcester.

Shootout in Worcester.

Monarchs missed a 3 on 1 in the dying seconds of OT.

Monarchs lose 3-2 in the shootout. They were lucky to get a point. After playing a very solid 2 periods, they played an awful 3rd period. Which cost them the game. None the less 5 points out of 6 on a 3 game weekend isn't bad at all!

SICK goal by Deslauriers to win in OT for the Monarchs over the Falcons (Blue Jackets). Des also had the game timer to send it into to overtime.

Now, he defiantly tripped the Falcon defenseman just prior to the goal... But, whatever!

To be fair, the current team actually isn't descended from the IHL team that originally bore that name -- the ECHL expansion team, however, correctly assessed the nostalgic feelings that the Orlando hockey fans had for "their" Solar Bears, which were "taken away from them" when the IHL folded. So, I think the DeVos family is actually to blame for that name in the first place.

Oh, how I miss those few years you could get WCHL/ECHL games (and sometimes delicious playoff series) between the Ice Dogs and the San Diego Gulls... both teams defunct now, alas.
