Penguins on Draft Day

Not getting ahead of myself here, but just looking to the future a little. This draft does have some depth to it. Seeing the Pens trade away the 1st and 2nd this year, which by no mean am I complaining about the moves. Just makes me wonder, will they try to get any picks back.

By that I mean we have two RFA's after this season. Kennedy and Jeffrey. They are not stellar players and can't command a 1st and even a 2nd would stretch it on a player without a contract, but on a team that needs serious help, could they fetch a 3rd?

Any thoughts or input?

Jeffrey could get the Pens probably a 4th-5th rounder and TK should get a 3rd rounder for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if Pens Shop Orpik at draft day. He would have more value with one year left plus with so many young guns coming up and a need to clear salary. Orpik could easily be worth a 2nd rounder plus a prospect maybe

Kennedy won't fetch anything. He is an ordinary player on an expiring contract. Teams would probably just wait for him to hit free agency, if they have any interest at all.

Kennedy has a better shot of being non-tendered than getting a 3rd-4th round pick. Pens are going to need to cut salary in spots and can't take the risk of getting stuck with TK at around 2m.

My guess: TK will be let go without any return. Jeffrey will stay. Pens will probably shop guys with higher salaries than him at draft say. Orpik or Niskanen. A revived Jokinen. We'll see.

Kennedy will get you a 3rd rounder. A team like the Oilers or even Calgary, who need depth players would pay it. 3rd rounders mean nothing compared to a guy who can slot in and play instantly and brings experience.

Hopefully they trade Orpik.

I'm still not convinced they will sign Malkin and Letang. Both are huge risks because of how often they get injured. Plus you have Crosby who is fragile. Do you really want $20 million + locked up in players who will inevitably miss a lot of time?

You really only need them to be healthy for the playoffs. Reg season means nothing

Hell to the no.

I'd rather run with a young guy for free. We also are lacking a 2nd round pick, and chances that Feaster wants to go from 30th overall pick to the 100th pick without a selection are incredibly slim.

Glass, Kennedy, and Orpik can go to make room for Dupuis/Iggy etc

Kennedy is 26 and he'd be cheap.

Malkin trade. Get your 1st rounder back and cap space.

Malkin and Crosby aren't really fragile in the bones of glass sense. They both get targeted and bumped a lot, so they both have some sores to show for it. Both had one longterm thing and are recovered from it.
I appreciate that Ovechkin seems to be made of leather or something, but I doubt we can get better than Malkin and Crosby for our money. Backstrom, Toews, Hossa all had big head troubles, Kane has a bum wrist, Bergeron and Karlsson have made their homes in the pressbox for long stretches. For Crosby and Malkin I take the trade off risk any day.

Way to completely ignore what I was replying to. You said Calgary would give up a 3rd for him. That's not cheap for a rebuilding team lacking a 2nd rounder.

If the Flames want him, they can wait till he hits free agency.

Kennedy isn't going to get us anything in return

Jeffrey I think we're going to sign him

I think if Shero tries to make moves to get some picks in return it's going to be Orpik or Martin on the move

Last year's trade with Carolina gave us the chance to make this moves this year, even if we don't get picks back we will be fine

I could see Martin or Niskanen also being available, depending upon how much cap space they need for Iggy/Dupuis.

A 3rd is expensive? In what reality is a 3rd worth more than an actual NHL player, let alone a young one who has won a cup and can slot into all 4 lines if need be on a rebuilding team? I must be out to lunch or just old. I remember when an actual dollar had more value than a pretend one

I had to scroll this entire thread to realize you were talking about Tyler Kennedy. Nobody is giving a #65 pick for Kennedy, who is a RFA and likely looking at something in the 2M range wherever he ends up.

Of course, as a Penguins fan, I hope that I'm wrong.

You have some prospects that could net you some nice picks, but it would be a lateral move. I think you just play it easy this draft.

The same way no one gave 2 second round picks for Murray?

-1 mill ?

If the Pens had better players than Jeffrey and Kennedy available I could see the pens getting a 2nd back. Though, they don't really need it.

Probably nothing more than moving Orpik/TK.
