Is Kovalchuk underrated?

He's an amazing hockey player. Got it all, size, hands, insane shot, great skating and he's not afraid to get tough. The last couple of years he's become a quite responsible defensive player.

PPG thru his entire career and great with the NT.

Some of the shine's worn off since his Atlanta days. He's rated fairly IMO.

Kovalchuk no longer appears to be the 50-goal scorer he once was. I think the luster of his offensive prowess has diminished, though this may be because he has adapted his game. I just think because he has stopped being the one-man show he once was in Atlanta, his offensive capabilities are perceived to be less than they once were. They aren't showing up in his statistics, and he isn't as nifty as he once was when carrying the puck.

I think the changes he has made to his game have made him appear to be less effective, though it's debatable whether he has actually lost the skill.

He is likely underrated, though ever so slightly. He is no longer a perennial 40 to 50-goal scorer, but because of that I think his current offensive contributions and capabilities are underestimated. People certainly do not expect him to ever score 45+ anymore. If he scores 35 to 40, I think most are satisfied with his offensive production. He can still be a game breaker, though he doesn't often show it. The potential is still there, so I'd judge him to be just very slightly underrated.

Kovy is one of my favorite players, just such an exciting player to watch. His TOI is comparable to most top pairing defenseman some games. I'd say he is rated fairly, maybe slightly underrated. I certainly think he has one of the best all around shots in the league.

I think he's rated fairly in the top 10 on most peoples lists

underrated as a penalty killer though, probably because he's so awkwardly good at it

He's probably considered the best winger in the World or at the very least top 3, and rightfully so. Don't think he's underrated.

Top 10 player for sure.

Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos, Karlsson, Datsyuk, then I'd likely have Kovy in the mix right after that.

I think putting his name beside Malkin's isn't that far off actually.

120 giveaways in one season would never be possible by Malkin, nor being a perennial minus player year in and year out regardless of the team. Kovi is a bigger liability than Kessel.

Eh, I'd say that's fairly ridiculous. I see both of these players a lot, and Malkin is easily the better, more productive player. He's the 2nd best player in the league when he's healthy.

Not to put down Kovalchuk, who is an amazing player. His production is still top notch, he was 5th in the league in points last season. This year, I believe he's been playing with a bad back. His shot % is also down from what it's been in recent years. It's a shortened season, a lot of good players are having bad years, and a lot of surprise players are having good years. It's a weird season. When he's healthy and on his game, he is a top-5 offensive player. He makes an impact every shift with his size and his shot, and he's also developed his passing game since being with Atlanta. He is an excellent playmaker.

Malkin is clearly the better player, though.

Ridiculous. That is completely untrue. He was once a terrible defensive player, but now he's a regular PKer and has become passable defensively.

120 giveaways...LAST season, it's not about penalty killing or playing on the PK, making costly rookie-like mistakes all over the ice hurts. Although, with the Devil's system, defense, and netminders they can probably afford it.

What is the NT?

I think he's recognized as a top 10-ish guy, about right.

Okay? A lot of his giveaways would take place in the offensive zone, which means a lot of them resulted in nothing. Sure, he had his share of defensive mistakes, but, for the most part, he was hardly a problem defensively.

I watch the player play a lot. It's extremely difficult to dissect a facet of the game with as many variables as defensive play. It's not nearly as black and white as offensive capability, not to say that offensive capability is black and white. It's more often correct to say "oh, that player is good offensively" using just their stats, while it's rare to say "oh, that player is good defensively" just using their stats.

He has become an average defensive player. He backchecks, he's usually in decent position, and he generates some of his offense from his improved defense.

For as many points as he has he should routinely be at the top of his team in +/- and you know it. It's one thing to have a bad year here and there but he really is a huge liability with the puck. Heck, he had 27 points this year and was still on of their biggest liabilities with a -9. Giveaways in any zone can lead to opportunities the other way and hence being a -9 with 83 points last year.

More like 24 a game because he gets double shifted playing the point on the power play.

i find me wanting more out of him. hes got it all in comes of talent, physical ability and he plays a lot. hes gotta be near the top in terms of ice time among forwards and hes not even a PPG this year.

It is an average of 26 has played a couple over 30minutes though. He is a machine.
