Bernier is two years removed from UFA, coincidentally the same year as Fleury's contract runs out.

Just sayin'.

Not that Bernier is chopped liver, but I think Toronto is going to regret giving up Frattin in 2-3 years. He's going to be a solid top 6 scorer for many years IMO. Being division rivals, I'm pretty happy about this trade.

You gotta think that the Flyers need to get a goalie now. I dont see them relying on Mason next yr and they were rumored to be a finalist for trading for Bernier. Maybe Luongo ends up there now, makes a lot of sense if you ask me.

I think the ownership who's putting pressure on Holmgren to put together a good team, no matter what the cost is, learned their lesson on long contracts with Bryz. I doubt they want anything to do with Luongo's eternity deal.

My money is on Miller.

Good point about the long term contract situation. Yeah Miller would make a lot of sense too though Buffalo's new owner has said he'd like to keep Miller around so who knows if he's truly available.

Old news from last night:

Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Reports suggest STL and Patrik Berglund on verge of one-year extension for $3.25M.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

"@StLouisBlues: We've agreed to terms with Patrik Berglund (@bulish21) on new one-year contract. http://*******/15D2mo8 #stlblues"/$3.25M
Brent Sutter to coach at WJC's:

Two-time gold medal winner Brent Sutter will be behind the bench for Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship. #hockeycanada
Buyout speculation:

Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Compliance buyout period technically begins at 11 p.m. ET tonight - 48 hrs after Cup final - but buyouts cannot proceed w/o waivers first.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

So tomorrow's waivers at 12 noon will be first time buyout candidates can go on unconditional ($100) waivers. Once clear, can be bought out.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Buyout period ends 5 p.m. ET on July 4, so if my understanding is correct, noon on July 3 is last time player can go on waivers for buyout.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

By my estimates, as many as 18 NHL teams NOT likely to partake in compliance buyouts. Other 12 range from "for sure" to "thinking about it."
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

MTL (Gomez/Kaberle) and PHI (Briere/Bryzgalov) are for sures. NYI haven't committed on DiPietro but one would think it's likely.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Komisarek seems a given in TOR. I'd be shocked if CHI doesn't buy out Olesz and Montador. Colaiacovo is a possibility in DET.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

I am led to believe EDM will NOT buy out Horcoff but Belanger and Eager are buyout considerations for the Oilers.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

EDM not buying out Horcoff would suggest they may be able to include him in a trade to a team that would then possibly buy him out.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

The really BIG buyout questions that, for now, remain unanswered: Brad Richards with NYR and Vinny Lecavalier with TB.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Keith Ballard is a possibility in VAN, I wonder about Malone in TB and Liles in TOR. We'll see soon enough.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Even teams that have no plans to buy out are hedging a bit to see what trades happen that may affect their cap. Such as MIN, BUF etc.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Following teams, IMO, not likely to buy out: ANA, BOS, BUF, CGY, CAR, COL, CBJ, DAL, FLA, LA, MIN, NJ, NSH, OTT, PHX, SJ, STL, WSH, WPG.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

And finally, remember, you can't buy out an injured player. But you can utilize a compliance buyout (limit of 2 total per team) next year.
So Bob thinks we aren't buying out anyone.

Kostitsyn to KHL? (he has one year left at 3 million with Nashville):

Quote:
Szymon Szemberg ‏@Sz1909_Szemberg

Russian media reports that Sergei Kostitsyn has signed with KHL Avangard Omsk. So the SK74 & AK46 NHL saga is over.
Shattenkirk re-signed with Blues:

Quote:
Jeremy Rutherford ‏@jprutherford

Shattenkirk's deal is $17 million over four years. #stlblues

I'm just mostly stealing this stuff from the main boards, someone always posts the news there within 30 seconds after someone has tweeted about it.

Forgot on the earlier long post, SJ re-signed two of their bottom6 players:

lecavalier to be bought out by tampa

Renaud Lavoie ‏@RenLavoieRDS 17m

Just learn that the Lightning will buy out Vincent Lecavalier contract. #RDS

i'd love to have him on a shorter contract, its close to his home too. any possibility?

e/ also, this adds to the pool of 1C/2C so weiss will have a harder time finding a home if they can get lecavalier for same cash... hopefully weiss comes back

We get Vinny they get Weiss? Also does this change their draft? Do they try to get Mac or Barkov?

seems like they're set for barkov now, i think

they probably know GMDT will pick the one remaining of jones/mackinnon, leaving barkov for them

i'd rather have weiss than vinny because what weiss means to this franchise, but if he's being a ****** with the money issues and wants to leave, let him leave. would rather pay an extra 0.5 or so for vinny becuase he's a good player with cup experience

That's what I was thinking. Now Nashville gets Drouin. Does this force them to try to trade with the Avs to get Mack because they wanted Barkov, if they were set on a center. God draft can't get here soon enough the suspense is going to drive me nuts.

I'm one of the bigger Weiss defenders on this board (or I would be, rather, if I still posted at the same pace I used to), but you've got your head, well, not in the right place on this one.

Imagine that, now he could end up playing for a division rival (Montreal or even the Panthers if he doesn't want to leave the State of Florida).

I think chances are quite good for the Panthers to land him. If I were him i would definitely give a call to Tallon the first thing I'd do after this. Close to home.

Sure why not bring in Briere too! Meanwhile we can trade Matthias, Bjugstad and Shore can languish in the AHL. Teams buy these guys out so they can build for the future. Neither Briere or Lecavalier's stats are anywhere near worth having them tie up a position and hinder a younger guys development. You want to contend for a Stanley Cup in a couple of years other teams old guy buy outs ain't the answer.
