Martin Brodeur's son, Jeremy, was drafted by Oshawa in the OHL draft today. Pete DeBoer is the owner of the Generals. #OHL #NJDevils
Technically DeBoer co-owns the Generals along with Adam Graves and some other dude.

honestly, i just dont know if there is enough out there this summer in free agency to fix the devils. and they dont have assets that can fetch anything good in a trade. that being said, might be time to think about getting a lot younger.

Which makes not giving up our 2012 1st rounder even more mind numbing. Just an arrogant stupid move by Lou that really going to end up biting us in the ass

Why are people so hung up on this? There's no guarantee that giving up last year's pick and using it for next year would net us a better player, unless we wind up picking in the top 3 spots or so, which is not very likely.

Mountain out of molehill.

Did anybody really think Lou wasn't going to wait until the last possible year to give up the pick?

Last year's pick was an asset that can be used sooner rather than later. Lou could have moved that pick for something at the draft, which ultimately he chose not to do. Instead they drafted Matteau, who is likely going to have an impact sooner than whoever they could draft in 2014. And considering the Devils prospect pool, they can use some talent now. Or he could use Matteau as a bargaining chip in a trade for something. It gives Lou more options than he would have had if he'd just given up the pick.

A potential top 10 pick in 14 is worth more than Matteau or the pick itself.

That pick has as much chance at being in the 20's as it does in the top 10. Unless you can see the future.

You still have to plan for the worst if you are a GM. Being careless results in well, what the Devils are doing right now.

It wasn't being careless. It was keeping an asset, and sending a message to the team that they're planning on winning now.

That's not what good GMs do. He held on to an asset that will ultimately be weaker than the one he forfeits.

Maybe, but we really won't know that for years. We don't know how Matteau will develop and we don't know where the pick they will forfeit will end up being.

Ugh I'm not sure. I bet Cryan Miller is out for retribution after the game he came in cold, and we made him look real silly in the shootout.

I don't know if I am either. Don't worry though! We still have plenty of stay at home defensemen! And there will be a bunch of Bobby Butler's to sign come Summertime!

No, we don't know that the pick will be higher than 29th. We're assuming it will be. Unless you have a crystal ball you're not telling us about.

Sorry dude but this team ain't making the SCF this year, and if some big changes are made it won't be next year either. Before someone says ''Well last year we said the same thing'' People last year had a lot more faith than this year. We're almost out of the playoffs for good this year unless we win more game the last 3 weeks than we have in the last two months almost. So no 29th pick unless we trade, and I don't know how. If Kovy is cleared I can easily see him being shut down if we're too far out of it. The way Zach was 2 years ago when he came back from injury.

1st round pick today is more valuable than a 1st round pick next year...

Unless they get to the Finals again next year it will be. I really don't give a crap about the difference between 15-29 in terms of picks though. The problem is there's just as much a chance it's a top twelve pick as there is it being 13-24. Especially with all the FA's this offseason, and our goalies' advanced age. We've already had 'two' seasons including this one significantly worse than last year during this stretch, imagine if we had to give up the pick either one of these years?

Would you rather have had to forefit Tedenby in a draft or Larsson?

Well we'll know where the pick winds up being soon enough.

How Matteau develops is irrelevant, it's not like they 'knew' he was going to be there at 29 anyway when they decided not to forefit the pick. It's like trading a first-rounder for a second-rounder and then giving the GM credit if the second-rounder turns out to be a good NHL player. You still made a dumb trade-off.

I don't know what's annoying me more this year, all the losses to garbage teams (Isles, Winnipeg, Buffalo, Florida, Tampa) or just how much we've taken a blowtorch to the future of the team in the last twelve months from the decision not to forefit an easily gettable late first-rounder, to the needless jerking around of Larsson and Fayne.
