It's hard to pick something out, he played a simple game, the Enroth screen was his only mistake, other then that, he made quick safe passes out of the zone and had great positioning to keep forwards to the outside.

I guess a criticism could be, he's not mean enough and he'll never be a game breaker offensively.

I was able to view the first 2 periods.

There was one occasion where he had a weak pass out of the defensive zone resulting in a turnover. but he immediately recovered by taking the guy out along the boards, teammate gets the put and it's out of the zone seconds later.

Also he had some room to skate the puck once during a 4 vs 4, and it didn't really look like he wanted to. He seemed hesitant when skating up the ice and almost right after the red line he just weakly shot the puck to the boards at the blue line where no teammate was in sight. Would've been nice to see him rush a bit more there. I guess he knows his role is to shut down and not get points so he wanted to make sure he didn't get caught deep in the offensive zone?

Other than that though...I didn't really see anything wrong with his game. Very physical along the boards and he keeps what I feel is excellent separation when people are rushing into his end. Like someone mentioned, just one game, but if that is how he normally plays, he is looking solid.

Monahan, Ristolainen, Shinkaruk or Lindholm...

if any of those guys fall to between 8-12 the leafs need to jump up and take them, it would be huge in terms of having a blue chip prospect in the cupboard after Rielly like that.

However if we can land Gauthier, Burakovsky, Fucale, or Wennberg where we are picking then I'd be ok with that too

but yes you are right, but its not like we dident have physical players back in the days? look at the olympic roster from 1998 for exemple. ragnarsson, ohlund, m.nordstrom, u.samuelsson, t.sandstrom, m.andersson, a.johansson, forsberg, renberg, c.johansson. thats 10 physical players.

No room for them.

Komarov-Orr-Frattin-Kulemin are our bottom 6 wingers. None of them fit.

Morgan Rielly?

Is it just me or have we heard very little of Rielly ...almost nothing at all? I know he's playing with the marlies right now but that's literally all i know, outside of the fact that he has a goal and two assists ( or something like it ) .

anybody have anything on our bluechipper ?
good things? bad things?
ice time?

thanks.

There has been lots of Rielly discussion and he is playing some decent minutes and currently going through a learning curve at the pro game. His defensive game is better that i thought it would be this early, he moves the puck up the ice so effortlessly and seems to always make the right read. He pretty much comes as advertised, I wouldnt stat watch him though. Colborne, Kadri and Frattin were not over PPG with the marlies so its more about him adjusting to the speed and handling bigger, faster, stronger forwards

He hasn't been lighting it up offensively but was getting a ton of shots. Developmentally he only just turned 19 and in comparison Gardiner only managed 3 assists in 10 games as a 20 year old and 30 points in a whole season at 21. MR is way too young for the league, so no surprises. If he was a big minus, or was getting manhandled I might be concerned, but he is getting the minutes, so they don't think he is overmatched.

I think if he could go back into the AHL next season he would tear it up but he won't be allowed to do that, and I beleive he will go straight to the NHL when his Junior career is done.

We can certainly do better than Orr for a Bottom 6 winger.

Thats what I think personally. Whether or not we run Kulemin as a bottom 6 guy is up to Carlyle, but to me he is a top 6 guy so I wont include him for now.

Figure Colborne takes our 3c spot, or potentially in the top 6 if carlyle uses grabo in the same way but i doubt it. Otherwise, id assume Frattin is a 3rd line lock, and additionally McClement and Komarov in some fashion.

Frattin-Colborne-xxx
Komarov-McClement-xxx

Personally would like to see Damigo make it, but i am not counting on it. I could actually see the following as a strong shutdown line too.

Kulemin-Colborne-D'amigo

Would have punch the other way too.

Granberg will be playing for Gold.

He was the Leafs' leading scorer in the 1963–64, 1966–67 and 1969–70 seasons, and the team's top goal scorer in 1970–71 and 1972–73. Keon was considered one of the fastest skaters in the NHL, and one of the best defensive forwards of his era.[3] He would usually play against the opposing team's top centre, and developed a reputation for neutralizing some of the league's top scorers. In 1970–71, he scored eight shorthanded goals, setting an NHL record.

So in a division where Kassian, Lucic, Thornton, prust, Scott, kaleta, Ott, Niel and other ********** run rampant,

D'amigo is an upgrade over Orr?

Get a clue.

Haha the kid is a winner.

Granberg could be the next Gunnarsson and push for a spot on the Maple Leafs out of camp.

They don't even play the same role.

Orr is a goon, D'Amigo is a bottom 6 forward, who specializes on defense and the PK because he can.

I'd like to see him given an offensive role, but Eakins probably realizes he needs him on defense.

Granberg with 23:05 TOI in the gold medal game. (Only Kronwall had more, 23:27) Played almost 10 minutes in the third.

Saw the Tom Nilsson highlight pack with Sweden and I got an Ian White vibe from him which is good imo. Couldn't find any highlights of Granberg though anyone know where to find highlights of him playing?

Oh wow, I watched the first two periods and he wasnt on the ice often, but seemed to have long shifts... Wish I caught the third. He looked great though.

I expect him to get a decent look in camp next year, but with our glut of bottom 6 wingers and him still acclimatizing to the pro game, I don't see it happening for at least another year.
