Toronto/Phoenix

Derek Morris

Carter Ashton
EDM 4th 2014

The Coyotes are thin at forward in terms of prospects, and are bordering on retooling/rebuilding. Ashton looks to be a top 9 forward going forward to anyone watching the Marlies consistently, and they add a mid-round pick for a 4/5 veteran defenceman who is signed through next year and can eat some minutes.

Thoughts?

I view Morris as an effective NHL player that makes our team better. I don't see myself ever being able to say the same about Ashton or that pick.

Missing the playoffs in a goofy 48 games in 99 days with no training camp joke of a season is no reason to sell off all of your teams best players for a bunch of middling picks and middling prospects that will never contribute meaningfully in the NHL.

Another proposal for a Coyote who is signed for next season? I can see the Coyotes dumping UFAs that they can not re-sign, but for established core players does not make any sense. I do not see how that trade improves the Coyotes for next season.

I'd love to have Morris but that 4th is going to have to be a 2nd. If Murray is getting two 2nds, Morris is a much better player and Ashton is, well Ashton.

Morris would settle down our blueline considerably. A 4th and Ashton would be a steal.

Morris is nice but isn't worth the "upgrade" he would provide this team.

If we're going to spend assets on upgrading the D, we need to get Dion a legit partner. A true #2 d-man.

From a Leafs standpoint, I'll do it.

Leafs say yes; Morris would slot in nicely on the second or third pairing

I'd do that, Ashton is expendable IMO and Morris would add some stability to our D-core

Seems like a great deal for both teams and personally I can see the Leafs making a move similar to this one prior to the trade deadline.

Although i feel that if the Leafs were to try and trade for a Phoenix dman, it's gotta be Klesla. What would that take?

How about something around NHL player Derek Morris and John-Michael Liles?

I do think it would be a fairer value trade than if Morris was involved. I just don't see any of the Leafs forwards that is signed for next season, and is available, getting the Coyotes interested. It would not be for picks/prospects. The Coyotes aren't in a rebuild mode, but their concern is putting together a roster for next season. At the moment, if they are in a sell-mode, considering they are only 2 points from the 8th seeed, they would try to sell off their UFAs 1st ande then deal with tweaking the roster at the draft, if they want to go in that direction, with their overabundance of quality d'men being involved.

I can see Grabovski being a nice fit in phoenix. i cannot see his salary being a nice fit in phoenix. So....Klesla for Grabovski with the Leafs retaining 2-2.5 million?

At forward? Like who?
We have plenty of great defensive prospects but we are pretty thin up front.
