Here's my "camp" roster prediction:

Forwards (x21):

David Backes
Dustin Brown
Ryan Callahan
Alex Galchenyuk
Patrick Kane
Ryan Kesler
Phil Kessel
Kyle Okposo
T.J. Oshie
Max Pacioretty
Zach Parise
Joe Pavelksi
Jason Pominville
Bobby Ryan
Brandon Saad
Craig Smith
Paul Stastny
Derek Stepan
James van Riemsdyk
Blake Wheeler
Colin Wilson

Defensemen (x14):

Zach Bogosian
Dustin Byfuglien
John Carlson
Justin Faulk
Cam Fowler
Andy Greene
Erik Johnson
Jack Johnson
Paul Martin
Ryan McDonagh
Brooks Orpik
Kevin Shattenkirk
Ryan Suter
Keith Yandle

Goalies (x5):

Craig Anderson
Jimmy Howard
Ryan Miller
Jonathan Quick
Cory Schneider

They're apparently going to have 40 or so players gathered for the "camp" but I think it's likely they'll bring more players than I predicted, especially since there will be no insurance concerns.

I'm not sure Faulk will make the core let alone be on the top pairing. And how does Kesler not even figure into as even an extra ahead of Wheeler? My bet is Kesler will be on the starting roster barring an injury.

Ryan Lambert's team.

Forwards
Zach Parise - Joe Pavelski - Patrick Kane
Ryan Callahan - David Backes - Phil Kessel
Max Pacioretty - Ryan Kesler - Bobby Ryan
James van Riemsdyk - Paul Stastny - Dustin Brown
Extras: Jason Pominville, Derek Stepan

DEFENSE
Ryan Suter - Kevin Shattenkirk
Keith Yandle - Ryan McDonagh
Paul Martin - Dustin Byfuglien
Extra: Jack Johnson, Justin Faulk

Jimmy Howard
Jonathan Quick
Craig Anderson

I like most of his picks, I'm not even finding his goalie picks all that crazy. The only player I really don't get is Byfuglien.

Kevin Allen of USA Today also made his roster predictions. He's definitely one of the most well connected USAH reporters so here are some tidbits from his article:

The only lock on defense I see is Suter. I can't see it as a good idea to leave Pavelski at home.

Was going to say the exact same thing. I think if Faulk starts this year hot he's going to be playing in the top six in Sochi. Gets zero love at all, except from us who have a tendency to follow American players in the mix for roster spots.

However I will also say that I think Stepan, barring a severe drop off, will be a center for sure on the team.

Stepan just needs to continue to play well this season and he's basically in. The only way he doesn't is injury or drop in form.

Also looks like the camp roster is going to be out tomorrow.

I'm sorry just dropping in, was checking out other teams lineups and as a habsfan gally doesn't belong on team USA, he's a great player, will be a top 6 guy at the 2018 Olympics but not this year unless he has a monster start to the year

Paul Martin is soooo much better than Brooks at this point in time. I could still see Orpik making it if the U.S. wants another veteran back on D though.

Agreed, I think Martin's highly likely to make the team but Orpik is 50/50 though is helped by the fact that there are 8 dmen.

Given Bylsma's presence I wouldn't be surprised if both Martin and Orpik made it.

They would have familiarity going for them.
Either way so long as Martins still in last seasons form he should be on the team.

One thing I keep seeing looking at alot of these rosters is that the top line always ends up looking pretty small, like last olympics. For that reason I'd like to see Ryan, Kesler, or Backes even if it means the best players are spread across three lines.

I think the reason our team can go farther than other teams without a lot of standout superstars in the NHL is the fact that our lines are balanced and therefore automatically create great chemistry. That and, of course, our team stands for freedom and liberty, causing our team to play at a more dedicated and spirited level than say, I don't know, those lazy Russians.

USA

Parise - Kesler - Kane
Ryan - Statsny - Kessel
Callahan - Pavelski - Brown
Pacioretty - Backes - Oshie
Wheeler

Suter - J. Johnson
McDonagh - Martin
Bogosian - E. Johnson
Orpik

Miller
Quick

BTW am I missing something here, because wasn't Jason Pominville born a Canadian?

Pominville is an American citizen (via his mother) and has represented the U.S. in international competition before.

Jack Johnson is going to be on the team barring a ridiculously horrid season or an injury.

He has earned that right be repping the USA in pretty much everything whenever he isn't playing in the playoffs. As long he is close enough to be in the discussion, his time served with the USA will get him a spot.

Orpik can skate so big ice wont be a problem, he wont be competing for the same spots as more offensively gifted guys like Shattenkirk and Faulk.
