Cole's Plus/Minus: Game 5 - Vokoun vs. Isles

Very important: The Isles are frustrated. It's important for the Pens to stay out of ****. The Isles are frustrated and the Pens need to smell blood and attack. This is over if the Pens can come out and light it up. But it's important the Pens figure that out and don't get caught in emotions. They have to stay out of it, business like work, and hunt them while they are injured.

If they get in **** early in Game 6, then they are idiots. Let the Isles make fools of themselves. Play simple aggressive hockey.

Plus

+ Vokoun: I cannot describe just how important he was in this game. Simple things like covering the puck when chaos insued simply frustrated the Isles. Instead of firing the puck wildly at the goal and feeding off of it, they were getting pissed off as the game slowed down. It was so great to see the psychology of the game change.

Also huge save after huge save when we needed it. The Isles went crazy on us and the Pens just stayed in it due to Vokoun. Then.... we explode. THAT is what we need. What a game from TV.

+ TK/Vitale: I have so much respect for these two. They act like professionals. They know they can bring this energy and just patiently wait to explode. I love the fact they made their names and their games well known right off the bat.

For TK: I'm glad he found his old self, if even for just one game. We missed this guy. This is old school TK. Maybe watching the game made him realize what he needs to do again.

For Vitale: Any questions as to why he should be in?

+ Sidney ****ing Crosby: Terrible first period followed up by heroics. That backhand saucer pass was something I could only dream of doing. His strength through the two defenders was Mario like. Unreal game after a tough start.

+ Adjustments?: Coming up with the breakout helped the Pens establish pressure. It actually knocked off the Isles defense a bit. They need to stop the stretch pass all together and just leave it to coming up with speed. Then, occasionally, throw it in there. Not every time. It was a great adjustment but it needs a little more.

+ Lines: Let's just call it like it is.. we *****ed for these lines all day. It would have been even better w/ Jussi on that 4th tagging along with TK and Vitale. #HFknows

+ Despres: Back to looking confident! Thank GOD. He made hockey look bad for awhile.

+ Defense skating to pressure: Biggest difference in our breakout with support. They are not forcing but skating to pressure. I really like Martin's game, too.

+ Bylsma: Moving #10 to the 4th just for this series makes sense. Morrow is built for teams like the Bruins. The Isles speed was killing him. He really limited his minutes. Good decisions.

Minus

- Niskanen: Still a disaster. He's so nervous with the puck. I actually would put Eaton in over him. Let him sit and realize it's not a guaranteed spot.

Man did TK and Vitale bring a shot to the arm that this team needed. Vokoun obviously played outstanding. I hope DB keeps these lines together. Let the team gel a bit. I think we have seen some stuff work tonight.

Didn't catch the whole game, but I like that Cooke was the first to congratulate Vokoun on the win. Guy really impresses me this series with his play as he's consistently been one of their better players.

This is exactly as I called it.

I said all the Pens needed was a solid, stabilizing game by the goalie.
I said they got off track, then Fleury got rattled, they lost confidence and began playing undiscplined.

They needed the goalie to hold strong, to give them a chance to find their game and that is what happened.

Vokoun was the reliable force they needed.

Vokoun was the difference for Pittsburgh tonight, IMO.

His puck control was fantastic.

The pluses are obvious.

My only minus is that it took soo long for DB to make these obvious changes.

+ 4th line
+ Vokoun
+ Crosby's line
+ Murray and most of the defense throughout the game, forcing low-percentage shots
+ not buying into the Islanders' cowardly tantrums

- Niskanen
- reffing the score instead of the game (YET AGAIN)

-- Islanders gooning it up. oh yeah, folks, make no mistake: THEY MAD.

Pens play their best game, they beat the Isles by 4 or 5.

Isles play their best game, they win by 1.

What does that tell you, it tells you if the Pens don't give up that back breaker goal when they're up by 1 or 2, it will become a landslide. Also, the Pens upside is absurd as they made those adjustments this game and not just TV.

+ Fans. On NBCSports Pierre mentioned a few times how loud it was, and that he couldn't hear Kenny Albert.

Yup stole my post. No need to comment on the pluses. Just baffles me how it took this long.

Didn't have a problem with Niskanen tonight, though I wasn't watching him closely.. He compliments Murray well, who slogs it up in the corner and Niskanen swoops in and carries the loose puck to safety. They did it a few times tonight and it got the team out of potential trouble and into the offensive zone.

Obviously Kennedy and Vitale's speed and tenacity paid huge dividends through-out the game.

Letang's turnover count was way down from the past 2-3 games.. he might not have had any. Huge turn-around by him.

Despres's strength and physicality are pretty underrated. Dude's powerful.

Great game. Solid first, but once Kennedy scored, it was all domination. And Vokoun made some big saves, his job to lose now.
