Early Oscar Speculation, '13: 12 Years of Gravity or what?

The last couple of years I have started similar threads at almost exactly the same time of the year. This time around it seems a bit of an anticlimax, at least in terms of Best Motion Picture, as 12 Years a Slave and Gravity have both received overwhelming critical and popular endorsements and few viable challengers have emerged to halt their momentum. Still there is lots of speculation involving the other categories, and, who knows, fortunes can change very quickly.

So anyway, at this early date who do you think should be or will be nominated (or is a good bet to win, even) in any of the various categories?

Commentary is encouraged.

Two whom I would like to see nominated:

Best actor so far: Mads Mikkelsen, The Hunt.
Best actress so far: Adèle Exarchopoulos, Blue Is the Warmest Color

Gravity will likely win most/ all of the post production awards.

12 Years a Slave seems to be the heads on favorite for Best Picture so far, IMO.

Also if there is any justice in the world, James Franco should get a Best Actor nominationfor Spring Breakers - but he won't because of what the movie was. Still should though, his role was a complete transformation. I hope Matthew McConaughey picks up a nomination cause I thought he was snubbed pretty hard last year for Magic Mike.

In addition to 12 Years of Gravity, I think these 13 films will get nominations for A. acting or B. other things.

A. Joaquin Phoenix - Her
Cate Blanchett/Alec Baldwin - Blue Jasmine
Tom Hanks - Captain Phillips
Matthew McConaughey - Dallas Buyers Club
James Gandolfini - Enough Said
Oprah Winfrey - The Butler
Michael B. Jordan - Fruitvale Station
Meryl Streep - August: Osage County
Bruce Dern - Nebraska

B. Ron Howard - Rush
Ridley Scott - The Counselor
The Coens - Inside Llewyn Davis
James Ponsoldt - The Spectacular Now

I can't speculate a whole lot yet. Since I haven't seen any movies likely to garner Oscar nominations outside of the Foreign Language category. But Gravity gets a Danish premiere in about two weeks, and I'm really looking forward to it. 12 Years A Slave, I'll have to wait 4 months for.

But I should stick to what I can say something somewhat educated about. I have watched The Great Beauty and The Hunt. Both of which I think should be nominated for the Oscar, unless this is an exceptionally good year in that category. I think The Great Beauty is the better film, but not by much. But I would like to see The Hunt win, only because an Oscar should mean that more money will get invested in Danish film, and as a Dane I would never oppose that.

The studio has started their campaign, wisely pushing him as a Supporting Actor where he has a better chance:

I don't think he has much of a shot, especially since they're probably still bitter about his work as host the other year, but it would be fun to see...he gave a really great performance. Not sure about top 5 of the year, we'll have to see what else is out there.

I agree completely.

Though my rooting interest is Gravity, 12 Years of a Slave has earned its reputation on merit. I'd be happy to see either film win. I just love the fact that two art house movies are currently duking it out for the grand prize.

I'd like to see Franco get nominated in Best Supporting Actor for Spring Breakers. Best part of that movie and would be an inspired choice by the Academy.

Haven't seen any of the major movies yet but I always follow the race closely year round. 12 Years and Gravity seem to be the front runners right now. We still have yet to see how Her, Saving Mr. Banks, The Monuments Men and American Hustle will play out.

It's looking to be a great year for Oscar even with some of the premier movies getting pushed back. Best Actor looks unbelievably strong but Best Actress looks like it will be the same 5-6 (older) women that always get nominated.

Right now it looks like a pretty strong movie will win Best Picture and there's nothing I'm really rooting against other than The Butler.

Though he likely will for DBC after what he did to play the part (The Academy loves that stuff), I'd say McConaughey's performance in Mud merits some praise too. Too bad Wolf of Wall Street was pushed to 2014; he could've gotten himself a Supporting Actor nomination at the same time.

I'd imagine that Inside Llewyn Davis will be a contender as well, though probably won't beat out either of those two.

Thanks Cudi and Nick0930. I tried to make a thoughtful post and was hoping someone would quote part of it.

Early odds from an online betting shop

12 Years A Slave---11/10
Gravity---7/2
American Hustle---4/1
Saving Mr Banks---12/1
Captain Phillips---16/1
Blue Jasmine---18/1
The Wolf Of Wall Street---16/1
Inside Llewyn Davis---20/1
Out Of The Furnace---25/1
Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom---33/1

If I were a betting person, I would put a few quid on 12 Years a Slave now because I think that these odds will be getting shorter and shorter and shorter.

Tom Hanks could end up with the rarely seen double nomination, if "Saving Mr. Banks" is as good as the early buzz is, and those of us who've seen "Captain Phillips" know that he's at least in the early discussion (if only for his last 30 minutes, it was gripping), then it would be kind of nice to see him back in the picture (after a lengthy hiatus).

I'm personally hoping for Michael B. Jordan to get a surprise Nomination, and I'm wanting to see "12 Years A Slave" for Eljifor's performance, been a big fan of his for a long time.

Let's hope this is his year, even if he doesn't want it. That guy deserves some hardware.

Gravity won't win best picture. It will get special effects awards and such though.

American Hustle for sure.

Looks like Christian Bale and Amy Adams will be nominated, at the least.

Robert Redford for All is Lost, too.

David O Russell has been close for Director and Picture as well, a lot of pundits think this might be his year.

Probably not, I don't think people in Hollywood are a big fan of his, especially after I'm still here and his oscar comments.
