Player discussion: Tim Thomas

First off:

Does anybody know what the deal is with him as far as playing next year and being a free agent?

As Flyers fans would you be for or against buying out Bryz + drafting/trading for a young goaltender + trying to sign Tim Thomas to a 2 year deal?

I would say he's done.

I wouldn't mind acquiring a young goalie as backup for next year and then buy-out Bryz next summer.

As for the drafting a young goalie we do have Stolarz in the system but you can never have too many goalie prospects.

Whether we buy out Bryz or not, I'm against signing Thomas either way.

Sign a 39 year old goalie who hasn't played competitive hockey in a year? Surely there is no way that could end badly. However, it does sound like a typical Flyers goal tending anti-solution.

I'm pretty sure that's what my unconscious mind used as bait for me to make this thread.

They guy is a proven great goalie though, and I'm only implying that he is of course brought in at the right price, but that is a long shot to happen.

Wow I might as well just spin around in circles on the floor after that.

Yeah, no thanks. It would be fun to see people say they want it, then when they sign him, complain, then when he plays well be happy, then when they don't win the Cup say Homer sucks for not getting a goalie.

I don't want him on this team just because he's a jackass.

I would pass, I would rather listen to Bryz talk about the universe than Thomas talk about his personal life

Aside from age and not playing this year I'd say go for it, but with those factors considered I'd say not.

Thomas is technically suspended isn't he? I don't think he's becoming a UFA. Could be wrong.

I do not believe the Islanders suspended him. I thought if he was suspended then his cap hit would not count, and he is keeping them above the floor. I could be wrong however.

For me, it all depends on the price. If an acquisition of Thomas would prevent us from adding a significant piece elsewhere, then it's probably not worth it. If an acquisition of Thomas would cost very little, to the point where we could comfortably make him the backup if it didn't work out, I'd have no problem getting him.

Also, everyone keeps repeating the idea that he hasn't played in a year, but that could turn out to be a good thing just as easily as a bad thing. After a year off from the constant grind of an NHL season, he could go into 2013-14 feeling better physically than he has in years.

If the team could sign him for 1-1.5 mil for a year pending a rigorous physical and use him as a backup for Bryz I think that could work.

If memory serves me, didn't the Islanders sign him? I thought there was a deal earlier in the season.

I agree with this. I'd rather keep Bryz and try to fix the defense in front of him and see what happens. But I would definitely be for drafting/trading for a young goaltender. We need a back up. With the D as awful as it has been and Bryz playing almost every game this year I'm really not surprised by the results.

They acquired him in a trade for a conditional draft pick and reportedly to help insure the team meets salary cap requirements as set forth in the CBA. They don't pay him a salary but he is on the books. He remains suspended and the contract expires at the end of this season.

The Islanders picked up his contract from the Bruins for a conditional 2nd round pick for 2014 or 2015 if Thomas decided to report to either the Islanders or a team he was traded to by the Islanders. The move benefited the Isles cap wise.

The question is, do we really have room for two crazy goalies?

If we keep Bryz for another season, I would have no problem signing Thomas as a back-up. Yeah he is aging, but he would have a year off, not expected to play much and having a 2 time Vezina winner, Conn Smythe winner and 2 time First All-Star Team member, he may be able to help Bryz.

I mentioned that I would only do this if Bryz was bought out.

I'd rather have:

Tim Thomas - A crazy 2 time Vezina winner + Stanly Cup Champion and Conn Smythe winner + 2nd Place all time Save%

VS

Ilya Bryzgalov - A crazy Vezina runner up + 2 time olympic gold winner + Stanley Cup winner as a backup who has not lived up to hype regardless of the D in front of him.

Of course at the right price though.

Hasek in Detroit worked out pretty well.
