Montreal interested in David Savard [Mod]

Aaron Portzline: The Canadiens had interested in Blue Jackets defenseman David Savard. John Moore has also been a healthy scratch.

Montreal has had interest in D David Savard for a while now. John Moore being a frequent scratch gets ya thinking, too.
Portzline covers CBJ for the Columbus Dispatch

As a Habs fan, what should I know about this guy? Don't think I've heard of him.

yeah it was posted in the Columbus thread...a skilled defenseman named CHL dman of year in 2010...good all around skills, just being out played by Moore and Erixon and behind Prout in what the Jackets need at this time...but played well in games for CBJ this year...

needs to improve on conditioning...

Two days from the trade deadline seems an odd time to start rumor threads around prospects. Savers would presumably be moved in a package for a vet NHL player, not the target of an offer, no?

I like savard he's a good kid . Hopefully if it true we don't get him for too much !! He has a good body I think 6.2" , right handed shot .. I think it would be a good acquisition for mtl depend on the price !! I see him with bouillon .. That would be a good 5-6 with savard

He looks like a prospect A la Nathan Beaulieu.

Doesn't make any sense. We are LOADED with defence prospects of all kinds. Offensive, 2 way, tough, big, small...

Why?

Isn't Weber basically the same type of Dman (albeit crappier)

I agree that it's odd. We know the Blue Jackets are buyers, so it makes some level of sense that Savard's name would be out there (although not unlimited), but the Habs are themselves hardly in a position where they'd be a potential supplier, to say the least. And on the off-chance that it's one of the very rare prospect-for-prospect deals, the timing does seem quite odd.

Unlike those prospects, David Savard can step in and play now. An upgrade for the playoffs while not mortgaging the future. Might just be an upgrade on one of those prospects.

He won't be in a season or 2 but because he's young and has potential, he will cost more than a veteran would. Also there's no rush, we aren't going very far yet and he's not the piece that puts us over the top.

I agree that Jackets have a logjam on defence and a trade for forward depth is better for them, but another team is more suitable for Savard (Philly).

When you think of trading for a guy at the deadline who can step in and play now, David Savard and his 34 NHL games' experience don't exactly leap to mind. Typically if you're making any kind of trade now in the Habs' position, it's for experience.

I'm not knocking Savard really, I think he could be a good player. He could turn out better than any of our D prospects, who knows. But it would seem to be a very lateral move for the Habs at this point in time, which is why I echo the general puzzlement in this thread.

Mod corrected the title. Used to say Rumor instead of Speculation.

I don't see how a young defenceman can help the habs right now. If he can have an impact on this team in two years he'll basically be fighting with Tinordi, Beaulieu, Ellis, Pateryn and others for a roster spot.

Yeah this one doesn't make alot of sense. Probably not good enough to make our team now, and not really any better than a half dozen D prospects we already have in the system knocking on the door.

Doesn't make sense Montreal, has over half a dozen D prospects in their organization. It is their deepest position and they will probably be making future trades with so many in the system to thin it out.
