The next captain will be Vanek. There's no reason for the Sabres not to lock him up and when they wave a giant contract in front of him he'll sign rather than waiting a year to go to UFA. Pegula will be working this behind scenes.
If they want to assign a new C, it should go to Vanek. If Pegula/Regier have any hopes or plans of re-signing him, imagine how slighted it would make Vanek feel to not put the C on him for the next year or so. Not only is Pominville in Minny now, but he had ties there from playing at The U of M. Throw in a sort of slight/insult(?) by not giving him the C, or giving it to a younger and less tenured player and it won't matter if they want him back. He'll be as good as gone, and hope to take Heatley's cap space in 14-15.
If they have no future plans for him, then whatever, but I think by not giving him the C now (or soon) it pretty much puts the writing on the wall. The guy cares and takes a beating. People don't like the anger/disappointment he shows, but he acts just like a pretty well loved and respected Yankee named Paul O'Neill, who was the textbook definition of fiery competitiveness. I think he deserves it until he's not a Sabre anymore.
I think the top choices would be Vanek, Ott, Hecht (unlikely, but they seem to love him so much), or Foligno ( again unlikely, but you never know). My bets on Vanek. I think it just makes too much sense. Trade Miller and Stafford and let him know this is team to show the way to.
Who cares? He's clearly a leader and everything you hear about the guy says he's a consummate teammate. Give him the C. If Vanek were ready, he'd have had it by now.
A lot of people care. People care about not having our captain mouthing off at other teams' coaches and refs, especially in the same game that he watched one of our skill player get boarded from behind, proceeded to do nothing about it despite standing 15 feet away, then watched his best buddy and one of the worst fighters in the league get his ass kicked because Ott wasn't man enough to address the situation immediately--how 90% of this fanbase gives the guy a free ****ing pass over that incident is mind-blowing. A lot of people don't want our captain running around taking bad penalties and hurting the team.
He gives good interviews. He tries hard. People like him. He still shouldn't be the captain of an NHL team.
Bring back the rotating captaincy. If you play a good game and score a goal, you get to wear the C for next game. But Rolston has to make sure that every player gets the C atleast once. We can't let anyone's feelings get hurt.
