I don't care what the game or business is - I am *always* suspicious of any deal that seems too good to be true. And I agree with most of you - based on pedigree etc Roy "should be" a valuable acquisition. So I have to ask myself...what do I not know that caused this guy to go for so cheap?
To be fair, for a lot of GMs you're looking at a player who scored 44 points last season and is scoring at a 60 point pace this season. For a smarter GM, you're looking at a player who has gone through a rough stretch of SH% luck compared to their underlying numbers.

Most of the GMs I'd consider smart have teams that don't need offensive centres (Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, LA, St. Louis) or have bigger needs at other positions (Detroit).

Thanks for the responses all. Good food for thought.

Sorry to take the thread a bit off topic. Best of luck rest of the season.

Wow, I just read through the thread. Some of you guys are unreal (not that I expected anything different from you). This is a great deal that got us a player that this team desperately needed.

That said, the odds of getting a player with what will likely be a late second round pick is less than 20%. Mike Schucker's work pegs the odds of a second round forward playing 200 games at 18% and a defenceman playing 200 games at 12%.
I'd seen slightly higher numbers, but that sounds about right.

I also understand what you're saying about surplus value, but I also tend to think that guys like Hansen and Raymond aren't appreciably more likely to be found in the 2nd round than the 3rd round, are they? But a 2nd round pick seems to hold quite a bit more trade value around the league.

It just seems like the most value a GM gets for his money in terms of trading assets at the deadline. You can't throw them away, but in relative terms...

I like the deal. Was just looking at Connauton's results with mild disappointment this morning - glad the Canucks got some value out of a player with a ton of potential.

I'm actually mad Gillis didn't go after Jagr too. Roy + Jagr is almost exactly what the Canucks need at this point...

Checked out his stats. 22 points in 30 games puts him on pace for 60 points over a full season. He'd be our thrid highest point getter behind the Sedins based on those numbers and excluding Kelser. A great pickup!

This now allows the Canucks to save face on luongo. Deal him for picks .

Desl/buyout Ballard and re sign Roy

Yeah, I agree with that. I seem to remember there being a fairly substantial drop off mid-way through the second round in terms of pick value, then a further drop off around pick 100 in another analysis. For a team going into the playoffs as a relatively high seed, I don't think there's much difference in trading a second or a third.

Yeah, mostly because you get the benefit of accrued cap savings.

2nd round pick for a pure rental is not bad. Connauton is hilariously overrated.

too lazy to read back, how likely he resigns? i hate rentals

edit - nevermind, read up a couple posts

looks like a rental :/

If we get Clowe or another substantial player, i like that we got a rental, if not, dont like it

Dado, you are fishing for reasons to criticize this deal.
"He's too old" (He's 29)
"He's injury prone" (with the exception of one of his 9 seasons, he's been very durable)
"No other GM's offered more than our 2nd" (WTF???)

I can't wait to read your scouting report on Connauton.

Great deal, Kcon is expendable with our blue line being locked up forever and the drafting of Corrado. Excited about this one.

I don't know about anyone else but I am happy we got a 2nd line player solely for the fact that it pleases pauser for a couple weeks so we don't have every thread talking about it

It's a good deal. KCon was a "B" grade prospects and a 2nd rounder is the minimum you give up if you're a contender.

Roy brings us legitimate center depth once Kesler returns.

JS can even play the 4th line and centre Weise and Lappy (who can take tougher draws, but plays well on the wing).

I like it and not a moment too soon.

I love this trade; great value even if it's a rental. However I have a feeling Gillis will work his magic and get him locked in for a few more seasons at least.

Can you imagine if we get Clowe or a different top 6 winger? I'm excited to see what else happens now!

Kypreos said he heard he wants upwards closer to 6m.

I dont think 5.5 is out of the question and is doable with lou, booth, ballard being expendable, if not, we know gillis was very interested in weiss before he got hurt and he is a ufa.

I am assuming the picks are going to be the ones in the iginla trade. How bad does that look for Boston. Their names get leaked out and all of a sudden, Iginla chooses Pittsburgh
