Carolina- J.M. Liles

Toronto - Zac Dalpe , 3rd '13

With the injury to Pitkanen, it is now unlikely they will move McBain. Even before the Pitkanen injury, it was speculated that they were looking for a defencemen.

No thanks.

Leafs are buyers, not sellers.

And Canes are looking more likely to be sellers than buyers. Plus, Unless they get rid of some other high dollar players, I don't see how they fit Liles' contract under the cap next year.

We take Jokinen? He only has one year left (I believe), so it gets Toronto longterm cap relief, but not necessarily short term.

The Canes Cap concerns aren't just for next season though. The following year, they need to re-sign Faulk and Tlusty as well, and I can all but guarantee that Rutherford will go hard after Marc Staal at some point down the road. I think Rutherford has always liked Liles, but his contract is what would be a show stopper IMO.

Ignoring the cap though, the problem is, the Canes have no starting goaltender, have a marginal (at best) defense that is soft and filled mainly with guys who are more offensive in nature (McBain, Sanguinetti, Corvo, Bergeron), they have no secondary scoring and have lost 9 of their last 10.

Why make a trade for a guy who likely won't be the difference between making or missing the playoffs?

LOL hell no. Seriously, Canes have no reason to bring on a guy like Liles, and we're in sell mode. This proposal is the exact opposite of this and screws the Canes up cap wise long term. It's your bad contract Toronto, deal with it.

Bad contract?

Less than 4 mil for a top 4 guy? Must be bad.

Im thinking that if the leafs are trading to carolina, carolina will have to overpay. especially now that they're sorta forced to find a dman

Easy there, champ. Not the biggest deal in the world if Liles doesn't move at the deadline. Some would prefer that he stay.

Don't take these proprosals so seriously. Can't be healthy.

Not really, unless someone else gets injured. They were healthy-scratching McBain ahead of the trade deadline, so he comes back into the lineup. Faulk should be back sometime soon. Sanguinetti (lol) should be back.

It's been like this all season, as soon as one guy is ready to return another gets injured. But we're not completely desperate for warm bodies like we were at a couple of points in the season.

He's 32, not really a top 4 guy anymore, and making north of 3.75 per year. That's a bad contract any way you slice it.

the average NHL salary is 2.5 mil, or there about.

Liles, is by all means a solid guy still. Not to get off topic, but he is far from a bad contract.

Anyways, this isn't a deal neither team would make... I really like how Liles has been playing since coming back from a healthy scratch.

He's still effective and is certainly a top 4 player. Carlyle is too ******** to use him properly though, and 3.8 for a top 4 defenseman is par for the course. Contract a year or two too long? Yeah maybe i can see that. But bad contract? Nope, try again.

Having said that, i would rather keep him than trade him for Dalpe and a 3rd, and im sure Canes fans would rather keep Dalpe and the 3rd than trade for Liles. Which usually means it's around fair value lol.
