Buffalo at the Draft

As a long time fan of the Sabres, I have an inkling that there are some serious changes on the horizon. With that being said, here is my proposal at the draft:

Deal One

To Calgary:
Ryan Miller
Drew Stafford

To Buffalo:
2013 First Round Pick
Alex Tanguay
Max Reinhart

Shores up Calgary's impending goalie issue and gives Buffalo a potential top 3 pick in the upcoming draft.

Deal Two

To Los Angeles:
Thomas Vanek
Joel Armia

To Buffalo:
Jonathan Bernier
Justin Williams

Eases cap space for Los Angeles a touch (assuming Penner and Regehr don't return) and makes their top-6 even stronger. Buffalo gets their goaltender of the future and a nice piece of offense (who can hopefully remain healthy).

Now I know cap space is tight in both deals, but if you're Buffalo heading into next year, is this the bridge that needs to be crossed in order to save face with the city and fanbase, as well as get this team back into the playoffs next year?

Calgary says no to the first one.

Buffalo says no to the second one.

Not a chance from a Calgary perspective.

Calgary doesn't have an "impending goalie issue." They're rebuilding, and are going to give the Berra/Ramo experiment a go.

And no team - Calgary or otherwise - is going to take on $10.5M in salary for Miller and Stafford.

The second is definitely worse. Our best Scorer, plus our best future scorer (if potential is scratched), for a largely unproven goalie and 31 yr old Justin Williams. No thanks.

A fan who has been watching Buffalo for a while should know that now is the time to sell high. Williams is overrun with quality players in LA and may benefit from a change of scenery. Vernier may be high risk-high reward, but why not give it a shot instead of sticking with an outspoken goaltender who clearly has greener pastures on the mind?

Yes meaning that I value Armia heavily, and because we don't have a huge need for a goalie unless Miller is traded. We're lacking scoring depth on the wings, and IF Armia reaches his potential, he will provide that. I'm not trying to discredit Bernier here, but he hasn't played more than 25 games in a season, to me thats unproven.

Vanek and Armia for Bernier and J.Williams is not selling high, that is selling very very low.

I don't understand how a Buffalo fan makes the second proposal.

Do you even watch Kings games? Williams has great chemistry with Kopi on our first line, generates a lot of offense, and is very well respected by the team. Plus, Dean absolutely stresses keeping the team that won the cup together...and Justin was on the 1st line for that run. Williams is going nowhere and we really, REALLY can't afford to add a $7M salary guy. 2nd deal, while good value for LA, would probably be rejected unless Buffalo eats half of Vaneks cap, which isn't happening.

Those are both brutal. The 1st for Calgary and the 2nd for Buffalo.

You are not a rational fan you dont trade young stars who are 20 for downhill players over 30.

The 2nd deal challanges Washingtons deal today for epic fail.

Calgary is sitting in 2nd spot in the draft. NO WAY in H E double hockey sticks they giving that up for any possible trade.

For the second one Bernier + might do. But the + has to be something on the order of a 1st rounder and/or top prospect. Not an aging forward like Williams.

Part of doing a rebuild is having players that will be around in a few years. Not someone who is on the decline that might retire before you even make the playoffs again.

Calgary is going full rebuild themselves. They ain't going to want a 32 year old Miller. if anything a Goalie like Miller would screw up a rebuilding Calgary team cause he would keep them in games that they wouldn't deserve to be in.

L.A takes that second trade.... keeps Armia and flips Vanek right away for a huge return

Bad trades. Vanek is worth a lot. If Pominville got what he did Vanek will get more.

Calgary is likely taking Fucale with a pick if they get a chance anyway. They can wait for him and pick up the other Reinhart next year

Neutral 3rd party here:

How about:

Vanek
Enroth

for

Bernier
Toffoli
Ebert/Deslaurier
Williams/Stoll/Brown/Mitchell/Greene (whichever caphit LA would prefer to move)

Given his inclusion in the Pominville trade, I have a feeling Buffalo feels Hackett is now its goalie of the future. No reason to trade for Bernier.
