Good pickup. Anytime you can grab someone that has been in the Nashville system in a depth role like this, I think it's worth a draft pick.

Optimistic take: We solidified our depth at C with a veteran rental for a long-shot pick.

Pessimistic take: We're renting a player for a very unlikely playoff push, at the cost of a pick in a draft we already have few picks.

HFboards take: We just traded 7 years of Jamie Benn for some guy I've never heard of.

Good depth trade, thought Whitney would be traded for sure today. Guess not.

I don't mind this deal.
Smithson is a really young looking 34 year old. Didn't realize he was that old.

Just think of the meltdown that would occur if that pick actually ended up a guy like Benn...

Good deal. He's someone with SIZE that can hit, and win faceoffs. We no longer have to deal with Belanger dragging down his own line. Additionally, If we acquired a puck moving defenseman, i would of been completely satisfied with the day and not half satisfied.

Eric Belanger (groin) will try to skate in the next few days. Could be back playing in 10-14 days. #oilers #RDS
He shouldn't be back "playing" at all.

I am ok with this trade. I was more excited about it when it seemed like we'd be moving out a contract so we weren't stuck at 50. Oh well.

Welcome to Edmonton Jerred.

True, I don't hate the trade at all but it is a little annoying to see teams getting better players for 7th round picks.

Oh well. Addressing a need, maybe we had to beat out another team for his services or something. Hopefully he does well enough here to get re-signed.

He's bigger, more physical and healthy. Good upgrade on Belanger in all those ways.

Anyone doubting this trade just needs to watch that Bieksa hit. When was the last time an Oil C threw a hit like that?

Also, IMO this means Lander is their plan for 4C next season.

Good trade.

Just to add about faceoffs, Smithson was 28-10 (73.7%) in the playoffs last year.

I'm OK with it. Belanger needed to basically go, now we don't need him. If Nugent Hopkins can continue to play better and maybe even pot a few down the stretch, our center depth is at least decent for the stretch drive.

Nugent Hopkins
Gagner
Horcoff
Smithson

Is decent down the middle, especially with Horc playing well.

I like it. This is what I was calling for. Trade a 4th or 5th round pick for an experienced 4th line center, and Tambellini actually did it. Would have been nice to get a more impacting player, but this was the glaring need and he filled it.

I'm glad I didn't get my bag on (loved it though) because this team is set and I support them 100%. If the rebuild is over, Tambellini is probably gone soon anyway.

Man, Smithson is going to be shocked when he figures out that a baby is just a small person. SHOCKED!

Almost like the other 2 trades it is just to give the impression he isn't doing nothing. (is doing something?) Being career safe.

I am happy we didn't do any major trades. Hemsky doesn't have his best value right now, Whitney the same. Nobody wants Belanger because he is hurt. We need and want the rest for our playoff push.

Smithson is pron to injuries and has had almost all there are. He doesn't play many minutes but might do some hitting and will for sure help on the face off dot. Will be the best face off man on the team right away. Can only hope he is able to play 10 minutes a game without being too much of a defensive liability.

Who is out if Smithson is in is the big question. Should be Smyth but will not be Smyth.

How were any of Tambos deals this year just to give the impression hes not doing nothing? They all address needs. It's not that easy to get a #1 dman

Insignificant, but a 4th round pick is too much for UFA Smithson.

Satisfied to have Smithson for the stretch run though. Wish it was done earlier when we desperately needed his player type.

It fills a 4th line hole with a guy who might actually win a faceoff once in awhile. The team needed this, so I'm surprised some think we shouldn't have done this.

A 4th round pick is nothing. The odds of a 4th rounder having any impact at the NHL level is remote. This deal also tells the fans the team is willing to improve for a playoff push, even if it isn't a big impact deal.

Considering the Oiler situation right now, I'm 100% fine with this deal and what the Oilers didn't do today. The only thing that should have happened was some sort of Khabby deal.
