Brad Richards to CAPS

It seems that Mike Ribeiro wants to test the market and will leave Caps. So that opens a spot for 2C and Brad Richards could be had for cheap.

Caps:
Brad Richards (6,66m caphit for 7 more years)
2nd round pick 2014 (for taking that albatross contract)

Rangers:
Joel Ward (3m caphit for 2 more years)
Jeff Schultz (2,75m caphit for 1 more year)

You could sign him after we buy him out in 2014.

He probably get's one more year to prove anything, something? Then get's bought out in the last summer of the allowable buyout period.

Guarenteed he is not traded thanks to the rule in the new CBA where traded players full contracts are transferred back to the original team if the player retires early.

Yeah, no chance whatsoever that the Caps take on that contract.

Did you even look at their cap situation before starting this thread?

couple of things.

1) - Rangers cannot trade Richards. Cap-Recapture risk is to great.

2) - and just as important - Rangers do not pay teams to absorb bad contracts. They have the financial warewithall to eat bad contracts.

If the Caps didn't want him at that cap hit when everyone thought he was elite, why would they want him at that cap hit now that he's started his very steep decline?

Richards has played much better of late, particularly after Gabby was traded. I don't know if there's a cause/effect thing there. Maybe he's just clicking more with the newer players.

Regardless, as others have said, the cap-recapture penalty if he retires early means he is likely destined to be an amnesty buyout, either this summer or next. 2014 seems more likely, but the way Stepan has been playing, Sather might feel more pressure to lock him up long term this summer, and that would probably mean either not re-signing Clowe or buying out Richards.

Yeah, don't think the Caps will be interested in Richards. The guy's after declining a fair bit this season.

I would be interested in Richards, after buyout. Not on that deal.

You want him post buyout after the amnesty option we almost surely will use.
I would send him to you cheap for futures otherwise, but can't take risk and be on the hook for that contract (cap hit) in 4 or more years if he breaks down.

I think the Rags need to wait a year and see what they have before they give up on him.

Wut...if it gets rid of BOTH Schultz AND Ward? Seriously? I'd take that deal before I finished my own sentence as a Caps fan. Who cares if he's overpaid.

Getting rid of 2 anchors is tempting, but I can't see how this is an improvement.

New York is better off hoping Richards rebounds next year than taking on two guaranteed useless players. If he doesn't, they simply buy him out at season's end and have a huge chuck of change to go spending with.

Rangers won't trade Richards. Even if Brad scores 90 next year, he'll be bought out. I don't see any scenario where they can take that risk of him retiring early and being stuck with the dead weight of 6.6 in cap space for multiple years.

They have an amnesty to use next year, it will be used on Richards. Almost no doubt in my mind.

No team is interested in richards with that contract. He is a buyout likely candidate.

Ward is far from useless. He has somewhat of a rebound season. I think he'll set career-high in points per game. Overpaid? Yes, 2M would be nice. Useless? No, far from it. Solid 3RW.

You should care, since both Schultz and Ward are MUCH shorter term anchors than Richards.

And Ward is totally trade-able.

Well considering the two of combined have less term remaining and make less than Richards...

Richards is arguably the worst remaining contract in the league. Two horse race between him and Luongo, but Luongo is actually performing. Richards has picked it up recently but no matter what he does he will be bought out. Way too much risk the writing is on the wall. The only question is when.

The issue is not 100% the contract itself, because part of it can be eaten, negative value of players coming back to offset, etc., are factors.

The issue is if ANYTHING goes wrong, it's on NY.

So if the OP wants to see if he can get the NHLPA and the NHL to redo that provision, or have them grant a waiver of it to Richards, then we can talk.

But since reality will not allow that, expect an amnesty buyout.

I think that's fair, this year is such a crap shoot. Richards deserves another chance to show he's worth what you paid for him, and I think he'll do it too.
