You had brought this up on TDL, I think, right? They had to retain a tad to make it cap-compliant for the Wild, since the Wild sent no salary back.

Besides, for 3 first round picks and a 2nd, and on a team that I expect is trading Miller and possibly Vanek, keeping 900k isn't too hard to swallow

They are a team that makes perfect sense for. Their owner has deep pockets. They aren't competing next year. And the owner is committed to improving the team. He's essentially spending cash as a part of the trade to make it as favorable for his team as possible.

Sources say #Canes will pick up 30% of Jussi Jokinen's contract: ~$227K in cap for remainder of this season, $900K in cap next season.

He's a buyout/trade candidate unless he absolutely lights it up this season, or if the Pens fail to re-sign Iginla, Dupuis and Cooke. If they sign all of those 3, there's no room for Jussi under the cap, even with CAR eating 30%.

pretty much how I see it. Shero knows we have 2 buyouts to use. He's a solid back up option and we can get rid of him if we don't need him.

There's always the chance he bounces back to form. He isn't far removed from being a 50-60 point player. Its low risk, middle reward.

$900K isn't too bad if that's what the Sabres retained. I guess I'm just surprised that they couldn't find an equal deal with someone who didn't want them to retain salary. Lots about this trade deadline surprised me though.

Dying Alive: $900K is what CAROLINA retains for next year's hit (Jokinen)...

He wasn't brought in to replace Glass. If anyone it will be Kennedy. Jokinen is a Top 9 / skill player, not a banger. Of course, Glass hasn't been a banger most of this season wither, but the point is they're not comparable players / signed for the same reasons.

Either one being scratched works for me, kind of like asking if I'd prefer to see IcedCapp fried of fileted.

Definitely makes a difference. We're talking about next year here. Kennedy should not even be here (be re-signed) if we're spending his $2M+ on Jokinen. As for this year, I'd put Kennedy on the 4th line permanently and scratch Glass indefinitely.

Sorry, I thought we were talking who gets scratched this year . . .

Kennedy should not be resigned whether Jokinen stays or even gets bought out.

Cooke's fate will depend in great part upon what happens with Jokinen, I suspect, although I personally would let Cooke walk too.

I'd call up Bennett and scratch both Glass and Kennedy permanently.

I appreciate the insight, Riptide. I didn't see that series. Sounds like they indeed DO discuss things, which negates my whole premise.

Thanks for the info, good stuff.

One could and should argue that it's more on the GM for picking players that will show up than it is for the coach to make someone care.
Point taken. Like I said, I didn't see the series, and thus don't know the relationship between them. I've seen both types of relationship between different tiers of management. Sounds like theirs is more the "working together" type. Fair enough.

And I agree, the GM bears responsibility for the players that show up on the roster, and thus, to some degree, for the ones that show up in the lineup.

If he's an asset with value and we can't afford him, makes sense to him trade him rather than buy him out. Remember, we can always eat up to another 50% of his salary in a trade, if no one is interested at 2.1. Eating some % of his contract and then trading him could net us some assets.

We just saw his value as an asset as a 2.1M/year player at the TDL. At 3M, his value was literally zero. Barring a remarkable turnaround, he is as close to worthless as an asset can get. I doubt the Pens eat some of his salary to make him more palatable to other GMs, when the cap is coming down next year and we have some of our own guys to try and re-sign while remaining cap-compliant.

They would have had to with Minny being a cap team. However, look at the return they received. 2 great prospects, a 1st and a 2nd in 2014. Pomi at 5.3m has value. Pomi at 3m (or however they split it) has more value.

Capgeek has Pomi on Minny with a 4.505m cap hit. Looks like Buf ate 795k of next year's salary. Plus prob ~400k of this year's salary. So them retaining ~1.2m of salary, gained them extra assets (prob the 2nd if I had to guess). For a team that's not contending, and who's owner is rich, it's a great situation.

Jussi at 2.1 is great. Hes better than TK and could fit on a top line next year.

Agreed. He's pretty versatile. With his ability to take faceoffs, I could even see him on Geno's line once Crosby is back. Have him be the FO guy, but Geno do all other center duties. With him in the lineup, we have a lot of options anyway.

Will have to see how he performs.

I honestly could see possibilities of any of these guys resigning. He will not sign them all, but would imagine Iginla is in the plans for sure. The other three will depend on how they play now.

It certainly gives Shero a lot of options this offseason.
