Perennial Roster Overhauls and Relationship to Postseason Success (Sting's Thread)

Gaborik out, Nash in
Dubinsky out, Clowe in
Anisimov out, Brassard in
Prust out, Dorsett in
Erixon out, Moore in
Fedotenko out, Powe in
EDIT - Rupp out, Asham in

Am I missing anyone else?

Seems like we basically re-structured last year's roster with different, yet similar players. On paper, I'd say some are downgrades but most are upgrades. Though last year's roster had terrific chemistry and bought into Torts' system extremely well, which allowed many guys to have above average seasons. Hopefully this roster shake up has similar results. On paper, it looks pretty similar to me.

Unfortunately, we gave up a ton of good draft picks in the process.

Thoughts?

We're now last year's Rangers only with an infinitely worse Brad Richards and a group of guys who don't know each other at all.

Stepan is an actual great C now, NAsh is better than gabs was imo, Hagelin is another year better...Staal is well rested oh wait thats the same as last year. D is a bit worse in play even though MDz has been great. So I guess I'm not sure. How is Moore? Essentially we should compare him to Bickle that HAS to be an upgrade and takes pressure off the other two pairs. I loathe the fact we don't have Artie still. We'll have to see with Clowe and Brassard. If Clowe is Milan lucic thats phenomenal.

All in all I feel we took a tentative drunken step diagonally forward for this year and the future. But that feeling is based on hope. I think that Gabs falling off a cliff this year destroyed this team and I'm not sure anyone is to blame we were all including most of the league in agreement the team was set up well.

Don't forget the fact that we also got rid of all our valuable draft picks.

The bolded is where I'm at as well.

Unfortunately, that came at a *major* cost though. We lost all that great chemistry, which we now have to try to rebuild, and we also wasted a ton of good draft picks. Overall, a pretty poor job done by Slats. Though I must say I'm excited to see this team as it's put together right now. At the very least, they shouldnt get pushed around as much.

I think we easily have a better roster this year with everyone playing like they should, but that's just the kicker now isn't it?

I also forgot we have Pyatt now too.

I think subconsciously my brain made me forget on purpose.

I think we would've been better off doing Gaborik for Nash straight up. Howson being Howson, he'd probably give us Dorsett too. It would seem horrible at the time but now that we know how bad Gaborik was going to be....

I would've let Prust walk. 2.5M is overpayment. I'd do the Powe/Rupp trade too. Sign Wideman with Gabby's cap space, and call it a day.

You can't do that with dubinsky's cap. we'd be in the same position we were, essentially worse.

i'd rather have clowe than dubinsky. the role players on this team are signfiicantly upgraded imo. but we lost a huge piece to do that. hopefully kreider can fill the void next year. but with the way torts is, i wouldn't hedge any bets on it.

Last year we had poor offense.

This year we have poor offense.

Next year we will to?

Very few Europeans left on this team.
2 forwards, 2 defensemen, 1 goalie.

I was thinking the same thing.

Europeans are always entertaining and likeable, we we had more.

I wish we had Sauer back. We could at least trade him for something. This team has ZERO snipers after Nash. I want a Setoguchi type guy this offseason.

My opinions in bold.

I like the moves. And I like this team going forward.

I'd say Brassard looks to be an upgrade over Anisimov. I also like Prust over Dorsett, but my opinion on Dorsett is limited to very few Columbus games I've seen.

Agreed with the rest.

Too much turnover from yr to yr. No wonder were struggling to get into the playoffs.

Yeah, its a similar roster again with the main change being Nash instead of Gaborik. I can live with that. It's not perfect but it's far better than the disaster we've been seeing so far.

The big piece is the one that matters the most.

If they weren't high on Gaborik's contract, his role on the team, his "fit," his production, how his injury history projected, they made the right decision with the information they had. Losing all those picks hurts, and almost every team that dumps picks in those kinds of numbers has some kind of "lean times" eventually as a result of dumping the picks and building to win in the short-term.

They didn't think that the Gaborik-Nash-Richards model was working, though - and although Henrik's not that old or injury-prone, the front office has to make sure that the team's "window" coincides with his..

I think Brassard may be more offensively gifted, but Artie did so much so well beside score. I would take AA over Brassard. In fact, so would the blue jackets. AA surprassed DB on the depth chart there. So, DB is a downgrade unless he flourishes here over a prolonged period of time.

Hopefully we've got Lindberg, Fast(h), and Hrivik on the way though.
