2014-2015: Post Lockout Sabres Part 2

I'm thinking 2014-2015 is the next time we will be even able to consider playoffs and at this point I'm OK with that because management has done the rebuild the right way and went wholeheartedly into the venture. Realistically it'll be 2015-2016 when everyone fully develops but lets get optimistic here and say 2 years down the road this will be our lineup:

Vanek-Grigorenko-Armia
Foligno-Hodgson-Ennis (I don't think he sticks at center)
Player we acquire via trade from picks-Girgensons-Leino
Kaleta-Larsson (worst case scenario)-Ott
*Scott or Kea

Ehrhoff-Myers
Sekera-Pysyk
Weber-Free Agent Vet

Makarov
Hackett

With some seasoning that is a VERY deep team coming on as a young group just like the 05-06 team. I'm excited about this and that isn't even considering Pegula bucks playing a bigger factor in free agency.

Why do you think Ennis doesn't stick at center?

He has continuously gotten better there, and is what he is - an offensive minded playmaker who can get points and possess the puck.

I've been impressed with him in the corners this year. Very elusive, for lack of a better word.

Ott on the fourth line? If he's here he's not a fourth liner IMO.

His faceoffs need a lot of work but I agree, I don't see why he doesn't stick at center, he'll probably be moved to the wing because his game is well suited for it, but I can see him sticking at center if nothing else works out.

I just think he would be a superb wing on the right line. You're both correct that he has managed at center but I think the two guys I project starting at the dot will prove better than him at that spot and make his transition to wing that much easier to accommodate.

You don't see a lot of agitators make it into their mid thirties. I suppose that was just wishful thinking because I like the guy so much but you're probably right...most likely some younger guy will fill that spot.

Vanek won't be here. There's a serious lack of top 6 talent at wing in the pipe, and even if you draft it 14/15 is optimistic.

This team is going to be putrid for at least 2-3 seasons.

Just hope the payoff is worth it, and whatever picks/youth come in pan out ok.

Key to that is hiring the right coach this offseason.

Makes me think RonJon is staying put.

But sure, obviously you need the picks and prospects to pan out.

What works in our favor, though, is sheer numbers. With so many picks, the likelihood of a decent number of them panning out increases.

EIGHT picks in the first two rounds of the next two drafts. EIGHTEEN picks total in those two drafts.

Tommy likey. Tommy want wingy.

Would it be unsavory for Pegula to start courting the 15 year old McDavid? Convince him to hold out for any other team except Buffalo. Lol

Why, what has he done that's so amazing from a development standpoint?
More players in this organization have regressed under his watch than developed.
And don't give me a list of all his shiny medals with the NTDP because that's not a level playing field.
It's akin to the Red Army team playing against an all-star team thrown together that had a practice or two.

Get him and his stupid gardening gloves out of here.

RonJon is Rolston? (your names for people confuse me jBuds)

He should stick, half the team are guys he developed, Pysyk, Hodgson, Foligno, Porter, Flynn and everyone else from the Amerks. Not sure why people want to fire him so fast. Even if you ignore his international medals because they are all star team, he won in the NCAA as a head coach and as an assistant and got the Amerks into the playoffs last year.

We have a GM who can accumulate talent and a coach who can cultivate.

We haven't won a playoff series in 6 years.

We've never won a cup in our history

We've gotten worse since Pegula took over.

Regier just admitted yesterday that they tried to build around "The Core" after Drury and Briere left and it's just didn't work.

We have the highest real money payroll in the NHL yet we are one of the worst teams.

What exactly was there to lose by blowing it up.... We could be "putrid"? We're putrid already.

I have a hard enough time thinking about next season, let alone '14-'15 and '15-'16.

Only Leino, Myers, and Erhoff are signed for that season. I'll accept your assumption they will still be with BUF.

Reasonable to assume Ennis, Foligno, Larsson, Weber, Pysyk, Armia, Grigorenko, & Girgenson will be on their pending RFA deals, and likely most or all of them playing for BUF. (Probably a couple other of the ELC guys too, but who knows who will be moved between now and then.)

Goal is speculative; but I'll grant the above is reasonable assumption.

Beyond that, too much is unknown. The '15-'16 Sabres have too many Mr. Potatohead options, and not all the pieces are in the box.

I'd rather speculate about next season.

You're forgetting about Tropp, unless you purposely left him out. He should be on the 3rd/4th line. Small chance Vanek will still be here as well.

I'm very surprised if Armia makes Sabres' regular team in 13-14. To be (pessimis)realis-tic I'd say he needs a season in AHL. Of course that roster doesn't look too tough for him to compete for top6 spot. U never know.

You mean 2013-2014? Presumably he will start in the AHL in 2013-2014 and almost definitely be on the team in 2014-2015, unless something goes wrong.

Not a McNabb fan? Yeah he had a rough year, but way too soon to give up on him...I think he can still be a regular in a few years. Maybe even next year.

It's a minor point and really shouldn't matter, but that drives me nuts...

I wouldn't be surpised if some players didn't take him seriously (rightly or wrongly) because of him wearing gardening gloves...

Sorry, I meant 13-14. I think he could play max ~20 NHL games next season but rest of the games in AHL. It will do very good for his attitude and development to learn NA way of hockey. I think the huge amount of games in AHL compared to Finland will suit him very well in the process.

You can basically slot in whatever our top 5 pick is from this draft coming up into that lineup.
Very, very young. But I like it.

We need to keep ott around for sure. He needs at the very least an A to guide these guys.
