****, I'm old enough to remember watching that live . . .

EDIT: Since you are implying that the question has been tabled for now, you should have written 'The Question is Mooted'. Writing 'The Question is Muted' also would have been satisfactory, as it complies with the king's English.

i want geno to stay here, but i wouldnt be super surprised to see him leave either. he might want to be the main guy somewhere else. if he does leave, are we in re build mode, or can we still contend without him?

So, you don't think we're a contender with:

Kunitz Crosby Dupuis
Neal [X] Iginla
Bennett Sutter Kennedy
Cooke Jokinen Adams

Letang Despres
Martin Orpik
Niskanen Murray

Fleury
Vokoun

i don't really understand why anyone would posit questions like these. can we at least wait until Geno has a 'dying alive' moment before we talk about life without him? there's been no indication that either party wants to move on. Geno has expressed time and time again that he wants to stay here.

that said, the second question is even more asinine. if Geno were traded it'd be for a hefty package, and while no individuality player could replace him, the depth Shero would undoubtedly acquire would probably keep the team in competitive shape.

For people that are supposedly fans of this team, you'd think they'd know better than to say stuff like.

You and me both. And not just the YouTube one, the one in the picture too (which I think was from the early 80s).

Jesse Jackson as gameshow host... asking questions and when he gets the right answer he delivers the mootness. Best line: "Well then who wins the car?"

"The question is moot; I'm the host... I WIN the car."

The best player in the world, a perennial Norris candidate dman, a solid goalie tandem, a guy who scored 40 last season, a guy who hasn't scored less than 30 in over a decade, a solid 3C, a 30G guy centering the 4th line...I could go on but I won't. If you don't think that team contends for a Cup, we're done here.

Would Penguins do an Eberle, Gagner, Hemsky, 2nd round pick and R.Whitney for a E.Malkin Swap?

Could also be written this way:

50/60 point player - BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD - 50 point player
30-40 goal scorer - X - Reliable 30 goal scorer
Promising kid with .5 PPG in his 1st season - one of the league's best 3Cs - 25-45 point getter
Reputed pest - 40+ point player/former 30G scorer - Scrub

Perennial Norris candidate - Promising rookie D puck mover
Mobile puck mover who is good in his own zone - aging physical dman
Mobile puck moving Dman - physical stay at home defenseman

Cup winning G
Best backup in the league

most fans don't have an interest in any of those players, including Eberle - the team most likely has it's RWs of the future in Iginla (could be re-signed for 3 years or so), Neal, Bennet (can play both sides) and Dupuis (likely to be re-signed pending a reasonable contract demand).

Is this if he's hurt? Because you would then move up Sutter and Jokinen and the 4th line is Vitale. That's still pretty decent, but yeah, I'd rather have Malkin but we are still a contending team without him if the team is 100% healthy.

Uh, how about hell no. I'd be asking for Hall instead of Gagner & Hemsky and no thanks for Whitney.

RNH, Hall, 1st, and 2nd in 2013 would be perfect. This is if Malkin wants to go to Edmonton and he wants out of Pittsburgh after this season and we find out before the draft. And yes, Malkin is worth that much, if not more. That's a top 3 player in the league, a franchise player and one of the most talented players in the league. If that's too much to give up for the Oilers, then I don't see a combination of players from that team that would make me say "oh, maybe."

Kunitz, Crosby, Iginla
Hall, RNH, Neal
Bennett, Sutter, Dupuis

I can live with that.

But this all hinges on Geno saying he thinks he would rather test the market and the Oilers are a team he wants to go to. That's the only way Ray Shero ever moves Evgeni Malkin. He would have to either ask for a trade or say he wants to test the market.

Putting aside the fact that Gagner is an RFA who will be getting a raise after this season and that Eberle's contract goes up to $6 million next season and Hemsky makes $5 million and that it wouldn't be any salary cap relief - which would be the whole purpose of trading Malkin - in no universe does a trade for Evgeni Malkin not include a 1st round pick. And even if you make it a 1st, still no. Like has already been said, swap out Gagner & Hemsky for Hall. Our GM is Ray Shero, not Jay Feaster or George McPhee.

The only way Malkin ever gets traded is if he wants out, and he doesn't. So the point is moot or mute, whichever you prefer.

This thread is just getting ridiculous.

The very few minority are saying Geno isn't good enough to overpay, but we want the world given back to us in a trade. It's complete hypocrisy. It's beyond laughable.

How about we keep it non-NHL '13 and just keep Geno and keep taking in the benefits. I sort of like that idea. And you can't underpay every single player in the league. Right now we have some great cap hits. If it takes 10-11.. so be it.
