The NHL on Spike tv

Over the years has their been any talks between the network and the NHL? Thry seem like a natural fit and would give the League more exposure.

IMO, the network doesn't seem that attractive an option now that the UFC is with Fox.

SpikeTV? Are you kidding me? I can't think of another way to make the NHL look any more bush league. They could air games in between episodes of TNA Wrestling and MANswers.

Hey! Whatever happened to that basketball-esque sports that combined Basketball and Trampolines? It use to be on Spike.

This. USA should get some first round games instead of CNBC.

Actually, yes. I spoke with someone who was involved in negotiations to put the NHL on Spike following the 2005 lockout. This would have been part of Spike's rollout of WWE and UFC programming. The league wanted more than the network was offering.

interesting. Were you given any indication if it was more money the league wanted or more coverage?

When Champ Car paid Spike to show their races (many tape-delay), that was one of the final nails in the coffin. Any credibility was gone, and teams and sponsors fled. Even though they got races on ESPN and NBC for their final season, they were done, and Spike played a big part of it.

Money. The person I spoke to, who was basically Spike's decision maker on the matter, seemed to think Bettman's proposed fee was not even close to reasonable.

It would have been interesting if the NHL had ended up on Spike instead of OLN/Vs./NBC. It's much more blue-collar and would have really played up the violence angle.

Per Wikipedia, Spike is part of the MTV channels, which is owned by Viacom, which is partially owned by CBS.

IOW, don't hold your breath.

TBS is as much of a joke but they still carry MLB.

I don't see how TBS is a joke, they probably get a lot of carry-over credibility from TNT's basketball coverage.

TBS is offered on every basic cable system nationwide. Can Spike or NBCSN make that same claim?

They have the play-ins, the entire LDS, and 1 LCS. They didn't get the package to air regular season games, they got it for the playoffs so they can promote their fall lineup during those games.

Playing on USA over CNBC makes much more sense for the playoffs.

On Cablevision's channel guide, USA is directly in between TNT (37) and TBS (39), which both show sports. CNBC is on 24.

It doesn't make sense from a ratings standpoint. USA is one of the top rated cable nets, averaging around 2.5 million viewers in prime time. Putting hockey on it would drop their numbers by quite a bit. Its not worth it for them. OTOH, CNBC ratings are brutal at night so they can boost their numbers for a few weeks. Makes more sense to boost numbers at one of their channels over causing numbers to nosedive on another.

But they showed the Olympics on USA and some of those events probably got worse ratings as well.

And wouldn't this be the same thing on NBC? Their ratings probably also go down when they show hockey.

Also, I think getting more attention towards USA is worth getting a drop in ratings, IMO. How many hockey fans watch USA? I do, but there are probably plenty of those who don't, and showing games on USA will get hockey fans to see their promos for their own shows.
