This is an unusual time for a workshop, then followed by an Executive Session.

"REQUEST FOR FUTURE WORKSHOP AND EXECUTIVE SESSION

It was moved by Knaack, and seconded by Martinez, to hold a City Council Workshop at 9:00 a.m. in the City Council Chambers on Tuesday, April 16th, 2013, to be followed by an Executive Session pursuant to A.R.S. 38-431.03. The motion carried unanimously."

There are a lot of billionaires that want to buy sports franchises right now. Just look around. The Browns, Blues, Grizzlies, Dodgers, Hornets, Stars, Pistons, Jaguars, and Astros have all recently sold. And that doesn't include Americans that have purchased European soccer clubs. The reason they aren't buying the Coyotes is due to the price, they don't see value in the market, or a combination of the two.

VCs certainly don't seem to believe the franchise is just one good owner away from being viable. They've had years to review the opportunity and that opinion hasn't changed at all.
anybody care to discuss IP?

WTF is wrong with Colorado?

2 Stanley Cups and playoff appearances in 12 out of 16 seasons and that's all they can muster for TV viewership?

I hope you like campy. Cheesy as hell that show, 60s psuedo-intellectualism at its drug-induced and over-saturated finest.

EDIT: Which is not to say it's not fun to watch, it is, it definitely has that "WTF were they smoking?" kind of charm about it.

c) Trying that cheap move from NHL 94 during a Shootout.

Denver is actually over-saturated with pro sports, given the size of metro Denver. It's the smallest metro that has all of the Big 4. Only 3 million people. And it has MLS, too.

Most of the other US metros with all of the Big 4 have 2x or more the population of Denver.

They have the worst record in the league, the Nuggets have won 50+ games and the Rockies (even though they're expected to be bad) are starting. Why would you watch an awful team when you have other viewing options?

Colorado is a very desapointing market. Maybe they should not have gotten a team after all. They only have support when they have a cup contending team.

I can't wait for this team to be independent of the NHL financially, and to be out of Phoenix.

That may be a reason for poor attendance since there's only so much money people can spend, but it's not valid for abysmal TV viewership. 3 million people is more than enough of a population to generate much better than 16,000 households to tune in. Turning on the TV and flipping to a channel is the easiest thing to do... unless you just don't care enough about the game - which seems like what it's boiling down to.

Anyway, different discussion for another time.

Would the option of the league funding the purchase set a precedent or has it been done before?

I thought the sale of the Predators was aided by league financing but I could be wrong. Would the BOG need to approve such a transaction?

Why would the league consider financing this sale to the tune of 80M when a sale to Quebec would effectively be C.O.D. No fuss..... no muss.

If the league were to proceed it would be easier for them to demand the purchase price in full and relax their policies of having 50% over & above the purchase price to fund operations. Still not a plausible (or profitable) scenario.

Monday is RFP Day. Get your bids in....

http://www.azcentral.com/community/g...ment-deal.html

Glendale’s new arena consultants will begin to elicit proposals Monday from outside companies to manage Jobing.com Arena.

The council is open to separating arena-management responsibilities from the hockey team’s lease to play at the arena, Councilman Ian Hugh said. “We’re looking forward to getting the proposals,” he said. “This has never happened before. And how long ago did we build the arena? It’s never been out to bid before.”

Beacon executives will provide tours of the arena to interested firms from May 6 through 10, narrow the field to two or three finalists later that month and negotiate a contract with the chosen company by May 24, Sherwood said. The timeline calls for the new company to take over management of the Glendale arena starting July 1.

**

Let's assume that the CoG is in fact successful in finding someone to manage the arena for them, and this someone doesn't own the hockey team. I'm kind of waiting to see what the CoG will call the $6M - $15M / yr "subsidy" that the team will still want. Can't call it an Arena Management Fee, because you went out and hired someone to manage the arena for you that does not own the hockey team. Maybe they will just call it what it is... a Subsidy to the Coyotes.

Good to see the COG preparing for their new reality.

To answer your question, CBC. There will be no subsidy. The new regime in Glendale has clearly stated that "the party is over" to the NHL and any would be suitors.

So they make a decision late May or early June? That timeline won't match with the NHL's. If May 31 (the same date as Winnipeg) is the last possible date a relocation announcement can be made, they won't make it. If you feel Quebec/Seattle need more time than Winnipeg did, they won't even be close.
