Los Angeles to sign Derek Forbort, as early as today

From a tweet by Schlossman (who covers North Dakota hockey) retweeted by Bob McKenzie

Quote:
Source says Derek Forbort signing with Kings is imminent. Could happen as soon as today. Three-year deal.
Forbort, 21, was the Kings' 1st round pick, 15th overall, in 2010. He is a 6'04", 218 lb defenceman who put up 4 goals and 17 points in 42 games with North Dakota in the NCAA this season.

Another solid D prospect comming up for the Kings. Should be fun to watch the young D core develop in a few years.

How has he progressed since draft day? Projected to be a big, yet very mobile 2-way Dman, correct?

His game is slowly coming together, realistically he still has at least 1 full year in the AHL, more likely 2.

6'4 was likely a few seasons ago. The kid is big.

He's listed at 6'5 in most of his profiles.

I totally forgot about Forbort

Good for him for completing 4 years of school.

6'4-6'5 and 218lbs. Forbort is going to be a monster when he fills out. Lombardi preaches fitness to his prospects too. If the kid wants to crack the NHL roster I'm thinking he needs to be around 225+ for his height. He's a big, menacing bruiser in the making.

He has zero offense to his game. It hasn't progressed at all at UND. Now I think we're just hoping for him to become solid defensively, use his size, and make smart little plays with the puck.

By the way, look for the Kings to sign about 8 of their prospects between now and next season, with a good handful of them coming soon.

Forbort
Shore
Mersch
Gibson
Colin Miller
Kitsyn
Gravel
Dowd

Last two will be signed after the Frozen Four most likely. And Gravel will be the best of that bunch.

I want Dean to make sure he signs Michael Schumacher (6'5" 210 lbs, 19 years old), the Kings' Swedish LW prospect before the June 1 deadline.

I was surprised that he went so high, given the zero offense thing. Maybe they were hoping it would come along.

Out of all the USNTDP dmen that year, I would have taken Faulk first.

Size and reach, It can't be coached into players.

Yeah but don't you have to be a little wary about drafting a guy who doesn't get *any* powerplay time in the top half of the first round?

Not really, it depends on what you are looking for out of him.

The Kings already had drafted point producers on the back-end.

Drew Doughty, Thomas Hickey, Slava Voynov. Jake Muzzin in the fold, They probably wanted a good sized D man they can mold.

Enter Derek Forbort, Also at the time he was BPA around 15 to 20(for Defenders)...

The idea is to get roster players each draft, Once these drafts leave the the top 10 , it's like throwing darts at the wall.

So far Derek looks like he is going to make a strong push to make the Kings roster....Mission done Draft guys.

That's a whole lot of pottery making and basket weaving in 3 years.

My randomness for the day:

In 2008, the Kings picked Teubert.

In 2010, the Kings picked Forbort.

In 2012, the Kings picked Ebert.

Any draft eligible "berts" in 2014?
