Can Ovechkin get bought out this summer?

craig Button said he could see Ovy getting bought out. Even though it would kill the WSH brand.

And that the NYR will most likely try to buy out Richards this summer and that hes not a #1 centre.

Too much cake, too good of players. Would be stunned if either happened.

Yes, it makes total sense to pay 60 million to a franchise player who is playing well to not play for your team. Craig Button is a genius. A puck-genius if I may.

And if Craig Button knew what he was talking about he would be working for an NHL team instead of working in broadcasting.

Would surprise me immensely, it would be like you said, a brand suicide, no one would go there after that.

Can he?

Well, you asked. Technically, yes.

Will he?

I have a better chance of getting drafted this year.

Destroying your brand to still pay a guy the rest of his contract amount solely for cap savings is not a good business decision.

This is honestly the worst idea/thread I've read on this board. Ovie's going no where and the Caps will be fine.

Alexander Ovechkin was 5th in goals last season. Over 18gp this season he once again leads the Washington Capitals in goals this season, and is 2nd in points behind his center Mike Ribeiro. He's also 2nd in hits, 1st in GWG, 1st in PPG, and 1st in SOG on his squad. Now let's factor in the amount of publicity that Ovechkin rakes in..

Buying him out is the single most STUPID idea I have ever heard.

If they really just wanted to get rid of OV, they'd trade him and take back a little salary. No need to buy him out. Don't think he'd pass waivers anyways.

This is why it would never happen. The NHL is a business, first and foremost. Ovechkin could be absolutely awful for a number of years and not be bought out.

Maybe he could sign with Carolina and instantly become a worse player than Troy Brouwer

He leads the league in dollars paid. How is 5th in goals acceptable by Washington standards?

Forget all this 'it'd destroy the brand' rubbish. He's playing well. He's not racking up goals like the Ovi of old but he's creating plenty of chances, and has clearly gelled with Ribs. There's no reason to even think of buying him out.

Can he? Yes. Will he? No. There would be a list of teams ready to sign him, and he would unleash the demons any time he played the Caps in the future. Oh, and it would likely embarass the franchise significantly.

Just think of what Penguins fans would say if it happened though...
