It depends how things shake out.

I'm much more interested in trying to dump JML and develop Gards to be honest .

Let us say Florida drafts first and take Seth Jones.Has ownership given their(COL) GM the we can wait 4 more years of no playoffs chip? Buffalo is another example,is an aging Billionaire looking to wait 3 or 4 years? Colombus today would be 9th?

A big factor in this is Reilly. If the Leafs think he is ready, will Carlyle want both guys?
Gardiner can be a major chip in us landing a young star center, something we actually need more.

Oh yeah, because having 2 talented offensively minded defense-men in the same top 6 is illegal in the NHL...

He was real good last night, he took a huge hit and stitches and came back to play very well. He will dress again next game.

As for his future, we may trade him, but only if we get back a over payment. Lets finish this year and see were his value is.....I think it will be high.

I'll put it this way , when you have to come up with reasons beyond the worth of the player why a team would make a deal , you know the player isn't worth what you want back .

Trade Gunnarsson ++ for Yandle
Love our D going forward but i fell like we just need to upgrade Gunnarsson with someone who brings top 2 qualities to the team and in 2 yrs we might have :

Phaneuf - Yandle
Gardiner - Franson
Rielly - Percy
Fraser
Blacker
Finn
Nilsson
MacWilliam

I like your idea, But we probably won't have Rielly/Gardiner/Percy/Finn if we want to get Yandle. We would have to give up atleast one

We have the depth and assets to make a deal like that, let's not forget that we might add a top 6 defenseman in the offseason through FA

Yandle is not the kind of defensemen the Leafs need. We have plenty of offense on the blueline (Phaneuf, Franson, Gardiner, Liles, soon to be Rielly), if the Leafs are trading for a top pairing defensemen it should be a defensive guy. Trading the only player capable of handling a top pairing role beside Phaneuf (Gunnarsson) for another offensive defensemen would be silly.

Gardiner did look a bit better in his own end last night, but in all fairness it's not like the Devils were rocking any serious firepower and Reimer did have to bail the team out a few times. Of course he made some great breakout passes and looked capable on the attack, his ability to do that was never in question I think. It's really no surprise, but still good to see. It's the reason we can live with some growing pains and have a good player or flip him for a great player if one becomes available.

But we are in a good position Defensively. If Reilly makes the team, tell me we dont need a star center? Here is what I will say,Reilly > Gardiner.

we have to look at what the important needs are of the team going forward.

1. #1 Center(Colborne is not that guy,)
2. #2 Dman- with size, tough, stay at home(we have no one in our system)

In order to get someone half decent we have to give up a valuable asset. Its as simple as that. Who that is by reason of youth, skill, huge upside. It cant be a forward we need them, so we have to go with our strength which is defence.

Our two biggest assets on D that have the above mentioned traits are Gardiner and Rielly. In order to get one of the above assets we have to decide who we can keep and who we can let go. Either one will be a loss but in order to get to the elite level we have those two needs above to adress.

Gardiner will some day be one of the best PMD in the NHL.

For any moron in here to complain about his skills to date you need to learn the word patience...

see Kadri for positive results on "patience"

see Schenn for negative results on "patience"

Give him a break... He's 10 times better the Costco

No just no. If we are trading gunnarsson, we should try to get a very reliable defender, skill or not. Yandle isn't that guy who'll work in the top pairing as soon as he gets here. He'll take some work, he struggles in a tippet team which should tell you something. Tippett is one of the best coaches in this NHL, and extremely strong about his defensive game.

Another game, another night of allowing his value to drop. Guy won't develop, and he won't be worth a 1st next year.

But O'Byrne is in now, and he's pinching. Randy fine with it.

It really is hard to figure out our D going forward. Almost an embarassment of riches. Fraser-Franson seems like a fantastic 5-6 going forward. It seems obvious that Phaneuf stays. So who become the other 3? I would assume Reilly is one of them. That leaves us guessing for 2 spots:

Gunnarsson
Liles
Gardiner
Percy
Blacker
Finn
Nilsson
Granberg
Loov
Holzer

Well now that O'Byrne has scored, looks like we won't be seeing Gardiner for a while

His Offensive part of the game is A+ plus but his defensive part needs serious work

Yeah, he's real bad defensively, a minus 1 in 83 games and playing over 20 minutes per night!

After not being played in the final regular season games? Seems really unlikely unless Carlyle has a hidden tendency for whimsy that he has yet to display anywhere else. On one level I would really like to see Gardiner get to play. On another level, one would have to wonder what Carlyle's reasoning would be given the fact that he gave Gardiner so little ice time after his call up.

Franson will stick. Fraser is nothing special and could easily be out of the league in a couple of years. Most of those prospects will also amount to nothing and we'll still need someone to go with Gardiner/Rielly on the second pair.
