And you can't look at straight points and say Backstrom's >/= to Kane. Backstrom was playing with Ovechkin when he was scoring 50 goals and 100 points a year. He was not the best offensive player on his line, or his team. Space opened up for Backstrom because other teams were more focused on Ovechkin. That's not to say Backstrom's not a talented player, he is, but do people really think he comes close to 100 points without playing with Ovechkin at the top of his game? No chance.

Patrick Kane's the best offensive player on the Chicago Blackhawks, and has been since 2007-08. Regardless of point totals, Kane's the guy other teams worry about most burning them, when they play the Hawks.
At the start of last season, before his concussion, Backstrom's scoring line was 38GP, 13-29-42. That's a 28-63-91 pace. This also happens to be the period during which Ovechkin was playing the worst hockey of his career, on pace for something like a 30-20-50 season. His other linemate btw, Brouwer, was on a roughly 20-20-40 pace. So hopefully that answers your question.

OP asked "who is the better player?"

Not "who has had the better career?"

Ugh. I feel like I have to mention that distinction in nearly every thread. Yes, Backstrom has a higher career PPG than Kane. So? He's stagnated at about 1 point per game ever since his breakout year. No clear improvement production-wise. Kane has taken a big step forward this year (and I've given my reasoning for why I think he had such a rough time last season as well as why I'm doubtful that his production this year is a fluke or career season). Obviously it's all opinion-based, so no one's "right" - at least, not yet. Perhaps take another year to see if Kane maintains his production and if Backstrom continues to stay at around 1 PPG. I think that that will be the case.

This is true but Backstrom was likely to hit at least 90 points last season before that cheapshot gave him a concussion. He was top 5 in the league in points when that happened. And this is with a slumping Ovechkin so you can't use that excuse. And right now he is on his way to around that same pace the way he's playing. So basically Kane has outperformed him barely (6 points) for less than half a full season and because of this some want to come to a conclusion that it's "NEC". Kane's biggest advantage is his natural scoring ability and he has yet to even hit 30 in a season yet. I have no doubt he will consistently hit that mark though as he progresses. But Backstrom is healthy again and you see the results. Backstrom is a better playmaker though, always has been and always will be.

Except for in 2010/2011 (when Backstrom missed time with a broken thumb, and also played many games with that broken thumb) he's been above a point per game. He's been consistent. Kane's the one who hasn't. He needs to prove he can continue his high level of play from year to year, while Backstrom has already shown he can do so.

That's just offensively. Backstrom blows Kane out of the water defensively as well.

Kane's a highlight reel player, but I like Backstrom's game a lot more.

Kane had 66 playing center for more than half the season. As a winger he's put up PPG every season of his career (or better) after his rookie season. This year he seems to be breaking out. Could it be an aberration, like I label Backstrom's 100 point year as? Maybe. I don't think it is, though - and after all, this is just an opinion. I have a hard time believing Kane's fluking into a career year when playing with pretty terrible linemates all season and not putting up some kind if unsustainable point total on the PP or something to that effect. Sharp - Kane's best linemate by a mile - has been injured for a good chunk of the year and was playing horrid offensive hockey before getting hurt. And I like Sharp.
Backstrom was top 5 in scoring last year before his concussion, way ahead of everyone else on his team. He was out for almost half the season.

That's great. Still a point-per-game pace (44 in 42). Which is what I said.

That's not very nice.

Niklas Backstrom is indeed a great player, but his PPG throughout his career is definitely inflated because of Alexander Ovechkin.

Before anybody tries to use the same argument but with Jonathan Toews or Marian Hossa for Patrick Kane, please give your head a shake. Ovechkin is generational. And this season he doesn't play with them anyways.

The 2010 Blackhawks were better than any Capitals team the 7 years. By far.
