I'm pretty sure the problem in Edmonton was that it was so cold outside that the ice was too hard and brittle. As long as it's not raining, outdoor ice made in warmer climates should be fine. This isn't the Las Vegas parking lot game - the NHL has a portable piping system and plenty of set-up time.

If it's true that they're not having it on the same day as the Winter Classic and the Rose Bowl, then my only complaint with the idea is gone. Have nothing against L.A. getting an outdoor game, just didn't want it to stacked against the other outdoor game and a different event in the same market completely overshadowing it on the same day.

That being said, I do hope they go outside California for the visiting team. Having it essentially be a subway game doesn't seem that interesting to me.

Lot of naïveté in this thread based on only a base knowledge (hot /= cold) of ice surfaces around the league. The ice will be fine. They wouldn't plan an event like this unless a reasonable ice surface was perfectly possible.

It will be neat to see.

First ever NHL game to be decided by a water polo shootout.

Seriously, though.....good for LA.

Yeah, it would be like getting yet another national broadcast of a Chicago - Detroit or Washington - Pittsburgh game.

If it is another team outside of California I will be PISSED. This is probably the only time there will ever be an outdoor game withing 1000 miles of here and they better not waste it on a team like Philly that will have 1 within 1000 miles the majority of the time...

as long as it doesn't rain, the weather will be perfect....oh i forgot, only the eastern conference has hockey, therefore only they can have outdoor games

Actually, I can get with that. I was more thinking from a national ratings perspective and a matchup that might have some subplots. I guess I would be cool with a Kings vs Sharks matchup.

Can we all agree that neither the Ducks or the kings have the worst ice?

That title goes to Edmonton and the Devils

Well, Detroit will be next season. I think some posters don't like the idea of a franchise that's already been in a winter classic game or two coming to LA for a third one, when this is their teams' shot to finally be in one.

If it's not the Ducks or Sharks(obviously hoping for the latter, and IMO it makes more sense), it's a travesty.

Message board sensitivity is taken to a whole new level when fans start bickering over their quality of ice. That sure is an insulting slap in the face in some circles. How dare thee insult thy ice?!

To add to the hilarity, there was a poll taken by NHL players where it was for the most part unanimous that the Ducks have the worst ice surface in the NHL. I've skated on there and it is choppy as hell. I've been to local ice rinks that have smoother ice.

This "worst ice surface" topic is becoming dumb. In 2010/2011, the NHLPA and Hockey Night in Canada conducted a series of polls about various topics around the league (for a complete list, click the following link: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/allstar/poll/). On the topic of best and worst ice surfaces, here were the results

BEST
1. Edmonton - 37%
2. Montreal - 15%
3. Detroit - 13%
4. Minnesota - 8%
5. Vancouver - 7%

Source: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/alls...-the-best-ice/

WORST
1. Florida - 20%
2. New York Rangers - 14%
3. Tampa Bay - 12%
4. Anaheim - 10%
5. Los Angeles - 9%

At least the Rangers and Kings have the excuse that their arena is used for other venues any night that they aren't playing.... and sometimes even the same day.
