I think we can all agree that before his injury, he was the clear winner. However, if he doesn't return until the playoffs or until just shortly before them, will that damage his chances?

I think he should, but they'll probably give it to someone else.

Also there's no way he wins the Art Ross, 6 players are on pace to pass him and likely will.

If Crosby comes back before the end of the season and wins the Art Ross, or at least keeps it a bit closer, then he will win for sure. Even playing some additional games (scoring or not) would help him because it would lessen the "he missed a quarter of the season" stigma. Plus him coming back to finish the season would make him a story, rather than an "out of sight, out of mind" candidate.

If Crosby doesn't play another game he's still got a legitimate chance to win. One thing working in his factor is that it's unlikely support is going to coalesce around a "consensus candidate". Kane and Toews have a lot of vote-splitting potential, Stamkos is going to get dinged based on how bad his team is, none of the goaltenders have really stood out above and beyond the other Vezina contenders, etc. I know this is like poking a wasp's nest with a stick, but his biggest competition (based on how things are going) could end up being Ovechkin.
