Yeah that's so weird, who would imagine that a country with about 500k more active players than Sweden/Finland/Russia would have greater depth!

I lent the format from a post of Jfc64 and played around a bit with the teams.

The D is ok through the 3 teams, forwards not that much. But even team C would probably make it through the round-robin.

I think they should just give all the medals beforehand to Canada, for years to come. Or just allow Canadian national teams to compete with themselves. I'll root for Canada-Z!

It's simple; the countries which have a higher number of registered players are likely to have greater depth. Given that fact, Brazil could field quite a few solid teams in soccer (football) and their B and C teams would probably be stronger than most European teams.

However, on the international stage, it doesn't matter how many good teams you would hypothetically be able to make.

What a strange thread.

Somehow I imagine the big 4 (Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden) could ice B teams that would still compete. Of course Slovakia, Czech, Swiss, Finland are all also excellent teams, I just don't imagine they could ice much past their original roster.

Its interesting actually. I always like annoying the Canadian posters on this issue. Sweden and USA certainly have depth enough to upset Canada at each level just based on Goaltending. Finland also.

Be thankful we don't take the sport seriously. You 'd never get a sniff of Gold. It wouldn't be like basketball but it wouldn't be pretty for you either.

Lolz worst excuse ever

This is our sport, and always will be, no mater how seriously it is being taken.

Don't know what the B team would look like. would be interested in knowing who would be on that team. I put my vote in for Duchene

Its not an excuse its a fact. We dont care about the game much.

When our best athletes across the USA play the sport and then you beat us you can say you actually accomllished something athletically important. Otherwise your the best in a great sport very little of the world plays.

too bad we don't take basketball seriously, we could live on the podium.

In other news some countries are better at different sports than others

In your dreams. We 'd stick you in our back pocket in every team sport we took seriously. You can't
overcome a 10 to 1 population gap. We would produce 10 Crosbys and 10 Doughtys to everyone of yours. Wouldn't be pretty for The Maple Leaf but we let you be the best in something.

I hate that sentiment.

Canada is the #1 hockey country, nobody in their right mind would deny that... but your game? Stupid.

If it was your game you'd be playing by yourself.

I hope that someday hockey will be like football (soccer), nobody is trying claim that its their game, they just wanna be the best in it and to be considered the best, you have to have competition.

Excuses and facts are not mutually exclusive. It is an excuse AND a fact.

There hasn't been a nation with more success than Brazil when it comes to soccer.

Brazil doesn't currently have an "A" team because they will be hosting the 2014 FIFA World Cup and as a result they have not played an official game in quite some time, only playing friendlies, testing out new players and so forth.

If not for that, Brazil has won 4 of the last 6 South American Championships (Copa America), two-time defending Confederations Cup, as well as reaching the final at 3 of the last 5 World Cups (and being the nation with most titles).

While Brazil isn't always the best country in the world, it's always near the top and it has massive amounts of talent, so much that it can have a few teams who can compete at the World Cup. The same can be said about Canada, a nation that also isn't the best at all times, but its depth is undeniable and people know Canada's D team can potentially beat Slovakia (which doesn't mean Slovakia cannot beat Canada's A team either).

Canada's B-team would probably be the best on paper. Canada still has a weakness. It's in goal. Their B-goaltending would be nowhere near their A. Nations like Finland or USA and even Russia in 2-3years would have better depth at G. And especially if we're talking Olympics and the do or die games a goalie can steal it for you.

I think we here in Europe refer such as World Championships.

They are played every spring, you should check one out.

Hockey is the only thing those people have, let them think it's "their game" if they want.

Sweden would make a solid competitor too I guess, at least they'll have 90 point Filip Forsberg.
