Oct. 24, 2013 -- The 1-7-0 Flyers defeated the 2-5-0 Rangers 2-1 in Philly. Steve Mason made 30 saves and Braydon Coburn scored early in the third period to give Philly a 2-1 lead. J.T. Miller's game-tying goal was disallowed after video replay for a kicking motion. Matt Read scored his first goal of the season and it came against Cam Talbot whom he faced in college hockey. Talbot, who was a substitute for the injured Henrik Lundqvist, made his NHL regular season debut. Benoit Pouliot was ejected with three minutes left in the second period due to a boarding major against Max Talbot; however, the Flyers failed to score. Less than two minutes earlier, Wayne Simmonds and Brandon Mashinter fought ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyxf1voyfCs ) which included a 10-minute misconduct to Derek Dorsett who earlier in the game fought Zac Rinaldo ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOODPWCEm70 ). Luke Schenn fought Carcillo in the second period and Brayden Schenn battled John Moore with 11 seconds remaining which led to 52 PIMs from six players.
Gary "Snake" Simmons made 46 saves but Andre Dupont scored the game-winner nine seconds after exiting the penalty box with under six minutes to play in the Flyers' 2-1 win against the California Golden Seals. The Flyers held a 48-17 shots advantage.
I've been really disliking Downies play lately so him being scratched is good, but what annoys me is Berubes hilariously inconsistent concept of accountability. So he takes out a player who isn't contributing and being useful and replaces him with.... Rosehill? That makes sense. How does Downie get scratched for a bunch of bad games but Hartnell was never scratched early in the year and Mez has been getting away with bad games for a long time now. A little consistency would be nice is all I'm saying.
The only way scratching Downie would make sense is if Read comes back because scratching a player and replacing him with an equally useless player isn't exactly helping. Luckily we have McGinn right now who can play on the 3rd line with Couturier and Lecavelier so we don't need to see of the 4th liners being used any more than they have to.
I thought it was pretty obvious by now that Berube's accountability schpiel is pure bull. We never stop taking too many penalties, Meszaros almost never leaves the lineup, and Hartnell was the worst forward on this team for the majority of the season until recently and I don't think he ever got scratched.
Scratching Downie is a smart move though. Guy has been terrible lately.
