FLYERS vs. RANGERS 2013-14 SUMMARIES
  • Oct. 24, 2013 -- The 1-7-0 Flyers defeated the 2-5-0 Rangers 2-1 in Philly. Steve Mason made 30 saves and Braydon Coburn scored early in the third period to give Philly a 2-1 lead. J.T. Miller's game-tying goal was disallowed after video replay for a kicking motion. Matt Read scored his first goal of the season and it came against Cam Talbot whom he faced in college hockey. Talbot, who was a substitute for the injured Henrik Lundqvist, made his NHL regular season debut. Benoit Pouliot was ejected with three minutes left in the second period due to a boarding major against Max Talbot; however, the Flyers failed to score. Less than two minutes earlier, Wayne Simmonds and Brandon Mashinter fought ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyxf1voyfCs ) which included a 10-minute misconduct to Derek Dorsett who earlier in the game fought Zac Rinaldo ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOODPWCEm70 ). Highlights -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b53ZcdJDHsw
  • Jan. 12, 2014 -- Dan Carcillo and Rick Nash scored in the opening 2:42 and NY extended its lead to 3-0 before the first period was at the half point in an eventual 4-1 home win. Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves and Chris Kreider (1-1-2) added 2 points. Luke Schenn fought Carcillo in the second period and Brayden Schenn battled John Moore with 11 seconds remaining which led to 52 PIMs from six players.

Goalies are generally confirmed days of games. Buffalo is the opponent Tuesday. My guess is Mason starts tomorrow (Sunday).

I hope Emery starts. Mason looks like he needs some time off and this could easily turn into another high scoring run-and-gun like performance.

Could do with a win here... the whole of the east decided to wake up through the last ~10 games.

No team in the east below 0.500 Point% through the last 10.

7/14 teams in the west are above 0.500 Point% in that time.

No surprise there, the West is far inferior to the dominant East

They demoted a forward to the AHL yesterday and have twelve healthy forwards including Carcillo. The only spare is a d-man.

Berube says Downie will be a healthy scratch.

Berube on Downie: "His intensity level is not where it needs to be, shift to shift."

I'm liking this move from Chief. Got to send a message to him for his **** play of late.
This puts Rosehill in and McGinn or VV on the 3rd line.

I've been really disliking Downies play lately so him being scratched is good, but what annoys me is Berubes hilariously inconsistent concept of accountability. So he takes out a player who isn't contributing and being useful and replaces him with.... Rosehill? That makes sense. How does Downie get scratched for a bunch of bad games but Hartnell was never scratched early in the year and Mez has been getting away with bad games for a long time now. A little consistency would be nice is all I'm saying.

The only way scratching Downie would make sense is if Read comes back because scratching a player and replacing him with an equally useless player isn't exactly helping. Luckily we have McGinn right now who can play on the 3rd line with Couturier and Lecavelier so we don't need to see of the 4th liners being used any more than they have to.

The Couturier line is struggling lately and I'm not convinced taking Downie off the line will help turn anything for the better...

I thought it was pretty obvious by now that Berube's accountability schpiel is pure bull. We never stop taking too many penalties, Meszaros almost never leaves the lineup, and Hartnell was the worst forward on this team for the majority of the season until recently and I don't think he ever got scratched.

Scratching Downie is a smart move though. Guy has been terrible lately.

Downie's not even close to 100%, look at the way he's tap-danced around post-game questions regarding his health and recent play.

This is not to say that other players are not hurt, just that I'd wager that Downie is still reeling from his earlier injuries.
