It's because of Subban's athleticism.

Yeah, I don't get that either. Personally, I think Gibson's technical advantage is/should be in his favor. Athleticism only takes you so far, but the technical game just fits in the NHL.

MAF is a case study for why technical soundness and mental makeup are as important, if not more so, for goalies.

The mental game is the hardest one to scout, which I think goes a long way in explaining why goaltender drafting/prediction is so hit and miss.

Agreed. Athletic goaltenders can make those bigtime saves, but without the technical game and the mental strength, those are the goalies who seem to be plagued by inconsistency.

I believe you and I had a discussion about Gibson during one of the prospect rankings, and my argument was that goaltending prospects are notoriously volatile, and I just wasn't willing to rank him amongst our best prospects until we(I) saw more of him and he could show a bit more. Since then, I think it's safe to say that he's done exactly that, and your read on him was accurate. All he's done, since we drafted him, is impress. He's shown that he can be consistently good, and when there is a big game he seems to rise to the occasion.

Gibson seems to have become a benchmark for future goaltending performances, and I don't think there is a greater compliment for a player. For the next couple of years, at the very least, he's going to be the guy that other US goalies are compared against. He may falter and fall short of expectations, but he sure seems to have everything you'd want from a (potentially) elite goalie prospect. At 19 years old, he already seems like one of the best young goaltender prospects in the game.

I think J. Quick is the outlier for super athletic goalies with bad technique. Quick is a flopper, but he somehow get in done

Oh, I was talking about guys in the game today. But yeah those guys definitely fit on that list. The other guy that's pretty damn good without great technique is Jimmy Howard.

Quick seems to rely a lot on his defense. The LA blue line allows him to be super aggressive. I'm not sure he'd be able to challenge the shooter to the same degree without the support he gets.

I totally disagree. To me, Quick is in no way a flopper. His lateral movement (as a big part of technique) is actually one of the best. His technique is pretty outstanding, it only looks pretty uncommon as he plays it at an absurdly low center of gravity. But it's really far from bad. The guy that fits your description the best IMO would probably be Thomas, and maybe Nabokov to a slightly lesser degree.

Your argument was still right. I was just going with gut feeling and only a small amount of game tape after all. So no "I told you so" here.

Cross our fingers and watch him grow.

Karlsson

Good for the Ducks. It was my understanding they had to get him under contract by June 1. Now the question, is he coming across the pond next season? And if so is Norfolk a potential destination?

Wasn't too worried, but it's still quite a relief. Looking forward to his further development.

Damnit, William. You owe me some nerves (or Ducks managment, idk you both figure that out)

The situation wasnt critical, but with that one guy signing with another team last summer, this was painfull to wait.

Here`s for the Boner 2.0

Glad to see Karlsson signed. I also think he'll stay in Sweden for another season before making the trip over.

Nothing has been made official. But every article I have read has implied that he will stay in Europe for another year. Same with Heed.

He said himself in a swedish newspaper that he'll play for HV71 the next season.
"Me, Anaheim and HV71 have agreed on it".
"My goal is to win the SEL and to become even better".
