Agreed. I wouldn't have signed Alfie either.

As an example, Kindl looks to suck on right with puckmoving duties and so does Smith, but guys with only stay-at-home role do well.

It has to be a defensive style stud, someone like Ericsson with his 6'5 reach compliment the handness weakness. We have enough lefties, who play on the right, time to get rid of them and start promoting those puckmovin righties (Sproul, Jensen, Marchenko) up.

Marleau is number one in ice time among forwards on the NHL's top ranked team (according to TSN's power rankings) and has 26 points in 26 games. Only two player invited to Canada's Olympic camp has taken more shots, only four have scored more goals. Marleau was the game's first star in defeating rival St. Louis recently and has been a star in three of the last six wins. And yet not a whiff of press about Patty outside of San Jose (but oh, all the ink shred on Subban!), other than kuddos to Ray Ferraro for mentioning Marleau as needing a hard look by Team Canada. One of the fastest players in the game whom Larry Robinson continually puts out on the first pk unit and plays late in games for a top club, with experience from the last Olympics. Here's hoping he's chosen for the big ice tourney once again.

I feel bad for Wings fan and myself about Zetterberg being out for a while. My only backup centers are Danius Zubrus and Tyler Johnson.

*** the recent stats! Henrik Lundqvist is easily the best Ranger (sorry cap'n Callahan) and worth the Big Apple committing to a seven-year deal worth $8.5 million a season.

I have enjoyed watching NYR for years when King Henry is in net (btw, MSG is one of the best broadcasters in hockey). The only veteran of his generation worthy of similar money is Ryan Miller.
(Younger Quick is overrated imo playing in front of a physical, talented, responsible skating core; ditto Howard with the puck-possessed Wings; Fleury with offensive bail-out Pens). If you can name five better goalies in the game than Lundqvist then you are on drugs imo. (Yeah, seven years is too long, but splitting hairs between four and seven years means little for a cash-loose franchise). I thought TSN embarrassed themselves in trying to indicate recently a goalie controversy just because some no-name back up young goalie played back-to-back games for the first time in years. Pleaase. Anyone who watches the NYR knows it's HL's team!

Best goaltender in the league.

Now they just need a team.

I honestly don't think Lundqvist has looked the same this year. He's let in some bad 5-hole goals; seems like reducing his gigantic pads by 4 inches actually made a difference.

re: at the end of the episode about the announcement of an engagement to marry:

Fiancé: "I hate cats."

Future father-in-law: "Well, you have one now. You better make it happy."

(The Closer, Season 3, Episode 9).

Overall, I have not seen such good writing since Homicide: Life on the Street, a decade earlier. (Yeah, I know I'm commenting on an episode that's years out of date but when you live overseas you see things when you see things, often later than originally aired, online.)

I am so glad that the players in the first set (green) are ranked above the HfBoards-overrrated-recently latter group (yellow):

Quote:
NHL power rankings:

2. P.K. Subban Montreal 0.13 0.65 82.55
3. Dustin Byfuglien Winnipeg 0.19 0.52 82.50
6. Niklas Kronwall Detroit 0.10 0.62 78.34
10. Keith Yandle Phoenix 0.10 0.55 77.07
11. Torey Krug Boston 0.27 0.30 76.92
12. Ryan McDonagh N.Y. Rangers 0.19 0.42 76.82
13. Andrei Markov Montreal 0.06 0.55 76.69
14. Oliver Ekman-Larsson Phoenix 0.14 0.52 76.35
15. Andrej Sekera Carolina 0.21 0.34 76.08
16. Victor Hedman Tampa Bay 0.21 0.32 76.03
17. Kris Russell Calgary 0.14 0.38 75.91
18. Brent Seabrook Chicago 0.06 0.53 75.89

...

21. Kris Letang Pittsburgh 0.26 0.22 75.37
25. Drew Doughty Los Angeles 0.17 0.33 73.97
29. Mike Green Washington 0.04 0.48 73.23
30. Zdeno Chara Boston 0.23 0.17 73.15
The latter four are riding the coattails of their rep, really aren't top-10 at the moment.

(Talk radio about salary and trade considerations for the Flames after the firings today)
TSN radio guy: "Wideman at 5 point ..."
Ray Ferraro: "Wideman at 5 point too much."
TSN radio guy:

Brian Burke is back on top of an NHL franchise in Calgary. I'm sure he'll do well.

His two greatest achievements I can recall were:

1) Trading up to draft the Sedin twins,
and;
2) NOT making a deadline deal during the insane deadline trading frenzy at the time (Burkie criticized through the yinyang here on HfBoards), and yet what did his team end up doing? Anaheim won the cup that season.

Who were #s 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and why weren't they on your list?

Guys who are usually considered among the best and thus not relevant to my point.

Uh yuh....come crunch time, who do you think is going to be on the ice for the Bruins? Krug or Chara?

OF COURSE Chara! But "power rankings" reflects how players are playing now, just as team power rankings are. Krug has been amazing, going back to his playoff heroics last postseason.

It's nice to see great performing defensemen get some kuddos when some recite reputation and really aren't referring to recent play. Each one of the green ones I have appreciated, though of course I don't think they all will have top-20 seasons overall.

Power rankings are what they are: a snapshot in time according to how some hockeyists take it.

Players like Krug and Russell on a list like this indicates how points-based it is. It's a well-meaning but ultimately weak attempt at a catch-all defenseman ranking. Much more useful for poolsters than anyone else.

Chara has been just fine, his last 7 games - 2 goals / 2 assists / +6 / 11 PIMs / 12 hits / 12 blocked shots / nearly 26:00 TOI average. Bruins are 6-1-0 in this span.

He's just getting warmed up....

You are right, of course. Chara isn't done being a top 5 defenseman yet.

Of course he is. He'll be 37 in 3 months, he had 19 points in 48 games last season, and he has 13 points in 32 games this season. As far as being a top 5 dman, stick a fork in him, he's done.

It ain't all about the points.....btw, he's tied for 2nd among all defensemen with 7 goals so far this season.....not that it matters.
